The purpose of this study is to investigate how drama play activities utilizing storytelling of pro-social behaviors have affected on young children’s Perspective- taking abilities. The subjects of this study were 38 children aged 5. All children attended a private kindergarten located in C city. The children were assigned into either an experiment group or a control groups. The drama play activities were provided to the experiment group five times a week. Total 60 sessions were offered to the group during 12 weeks of data collection period from 7thOctober 2013 to 27th December 2013.
Shin Hyun-Ok (1995)’s revised Perspective-taking Inventory (Hudson, Forman and Brion, 1982) was administered in order to assess young children’s Perspective-taking abilities. The data analysis was undertaken by using SPSS 14.O. The statistical analysis of t-test was applied in order to identify whether the pre-test of Perspective-taking abilities are equal between the two groups. Also the analysis of Covariance was conducted by analyzing the post-test means and adjusted post-test means of sub-factors in each group.
The results of this study have demonstrated that young children’s Perspective- taking abilities were significantly different depending on drama play activities utilizing storytelling. The analysis of sub-factors has shown that “Perspective-taking for other’s thought” and “Perspective-taking for other’s emotion” were significantly different according to the drama activities. However “Perspective-taking for other’s intention” did not show any differences. This study has demonstrated that young children’s Perspective-taking abilities have been enhanced overall by the provision of drama play activities utilizing storytelling. In the final section, this study presented the reflection on how drama play activities can be applied into practical setting as effective educational approach.
