The purpose of this study was to see the different characteristics of the translated fairy tale Cinderella, each in English, Chinese, and Japanese, by making Korean learners translate it into Korean. In the Korean Language Education field, most studies regarding the translation have focused just on analysis of error and classification of types, then analysis of the cause. Therefore in this study, in order to help Korean Language Education by utilizing the translation of English-Korean/Chinese-Korean/Japanese-Korean, the different characteristics shown in the translation text of Korean learners from English-speaking countries, China and Japan will be largely divided into linguistic and strategic characteristics. Linguistic characteristics will be analyzed by dividing into Noun group and Verb group. In case of strategic characteristics, into Deletion or Omission, Addition, Code-switching, and Syllable writing.
The procedure of this study was as follows:
First, each five Korean learners from English-speaking countries, China and Japan were requested to translate the fairy tale Cinderella, each from English, Chinese, and Japanese into Korean. Then, based on each language group, the analysis of the characteristics shown in those Korean translation text and comparison among them were conducted.
In terms of linguistic characteristics, Korean learners from English-speaking countries showed their linguistic tendency in translation of pronouns, in particular. As English is a more developed language in Pronoun than Korean and Japanese, it would be difficult for the native English speakers to translate English into Korean due to the pronouns.
Meanwhile, Chinese Korean-learner had trouble in expressing the tense, and Japanese Korean-learner showed their linguistic tendency particularly in translation of verbs.
However, as a result of strategic characteristic analysis, considerable characteristics were found in Omission, Deletion and Code-switching. The subjects tended to omit from the translation the expressions that they regarded as un-influential in the development or context of the story. Also, as a common characteristic of three language groups in this experiment, facing with the word or phrase that the subjects didn’t know well, they tended to translate it into their own native language - in other words, code-switching occurred.
In this way, this study has conducted research on the characteristics shown in Korean-learners Korean translation texts, by dividing them into linguistic characteristics and strategic characteristics. This study can be useful in Korean Language Education, especially in the area of translation, and furthermore, helpful in Korean Language Education for Korean-learners of the above three language groups.
