The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of parent-child communication, peer relationship, perceived competence and ego-resilience on suicidal ideation among adolescents. The subjects in this study were 435 students in middle schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do, who were 186 boys and 241 girls.
After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 17.0, and frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were carried out.
The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were differences in parent-child communication, peer relationship, perceived competence, ego-resilience and suicidal ideation according to gender and grade. Second, there was a close correlation among parent-child communication, peer relationship, perceived competence, ego-resilience and suicidal ideation. Third, every variable exerted an influence on youth suicidal ideation. Out of the variables, overall self-worth, physical appearance and peer relationship were identified as major variables to be highly influential. The former two were the sub factors of perceived competence.
The efforts by this study to have a perfect understanding of youth suicidal ideation to make an accurate diagnosis of it are expected to provide useful information on how to offer guidance and counseling for adolescents not to commit suicide.
