The purpose of this study was to grasp the relationship between smart-phone addiction tendency and emotional intelligence targeting children at Western age 4, 5.
For this study, it widely distributed 325 copies targeting children at Western age 4, 5, who are attending kindergartens and child care centers where are located in Incheon Metropolitan City, their parents and homeroom teachers. 185 copies, which were collected among these things, were selected as the final data analysis materials. To examine the actual condition of using smart phone, this study used by modifying some parts, which were used in “Mother's recognition related to child's smart-phone use” by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education(2012), in line with this study. To measure smart-phone addiction tendency, it used by modifying and supplementing the measurement tool of internet game addiction for children developed by Lee Gyeong-ok, Kim Min-hwa, Kim Seung-ok, and Kim Hye-su(2006), into the smart-phone use tendency. Young children's emotional intelligence was used emotional intelligence scale that Kim Gyeong-hui(1998) reconstructed in line with the real situation of South Korea based on Goleman's definition. For this, frequency & percentage(%), chi-square test(x2), T-test, and correlation analysis were carried out by using SPSS 18.0 program.
To perform this research, the following research problems were established.
A. What about the actual condition of using smart phone in young children according to gender and age?
B. What about smart-phone addiction tendency? and does emotional intelligence have difference according to gender and age?
C. What about relationship between young children's smart-phone addiction tendency and emotional intelligence?
The following are the findings according to research problems. First, the actual condition of using smart phone in young children is as follows. A person of having allowed a child to meet with smart phone first was the largest in parents. Even smart phone was used together mainly with parents. It was indicated that the smart-phone use frequency is 1~2 times a week and that the averagely use time per once is 21~30 minutes. It was indicated that there is no change in time of using smart phone. Smart phone was used primarily during weekend. The decision of using smart phone was made by child and parents depending on a situation. A reason that a child uses smart phone was because of being interesting. Among smart-phone contents, a game was preferred the most. Parents' effort level was moderate, which seeks activity that a child can use smart phone. It was indicated that parents try to utilize fully on all the activities before a child uses smart phone and give a help when a child asks for a help in using smart phone.
Second, examining smart-phone addiction tendency and emotional intelligence according to gender and age, about 88% was shown to be general use group, thereby having been low in addiction level. Behavioral characteristic out of smart-phone addiction tendency was indicated to have significant difference in gender and age. Emotional intelligence was shown significant difference according to gender. In age, there was no significant difference.
Third, the relationship between smart-phone addiction tendency and emotional intelligence had no significant difference from environmental characteristic. However, significant difference was shown between behavioral characteristic and emotional regulation & impulse inhibition factors.
