The Effects of Forest Experience Activities on the
Children's Emotional Intelligence
The purpose of this paper was to study the effects of forest activit on children’s emotional intelligence.
For the purpose of this study as such, research subjects were set as follows through analyzing prior research papers and experiments.
1. What are effects of forest activity on the emotional intelligence of children?
1-1. What are effects of forest activity on self emotional
awareness?
1-2. What are effects of forest activity on the emotional control of self?
1-3. What are effects of forest activity on recognizing other people’s feelings?
1-4. What are effects of forest activity on the self motivation?
To get the answers of these questions, 40 children in total from experimental group consisting of 20 children and control group of 20 children were randomly assigned from the early childhood education center located in Gong-Ju city, Chung-Nam Province.
20 children from experimental group were under close observation 12 times for the experimental purpose from June 4 to July 12 of 2013 for 6 weeks at the childhood educational center and near-by mountain which set up the environment for forest activities.
The instruments used to examine the emotional intelligence were from Kim Gyeong Ae(2011) who adjusted and supplemented the original package by Park Hae Soo(2008) for the children of ages from 5 to 8 years.
After the experiment, post-test was carried out to determine the effects of forest activity on emotional intelligence of children.
The questionnaires for the pre or post-test were the same.
Because there was difference between two groups in pre-test, analysis of covariance on the result of post-test was executed.
The SPSS 19.0 program was used to analyze the collected data.
The results of this study are as follows.
Firstly, among 4 sub-factors of emotional intelligence, self-awareness ability has difference with some statistical significance according to the extent of forest activities, so getting to the conclusion that forest activity leads to positive effects for the improvement of self-awareness.
Secondly, the ability to control self-emotion, recognition of other people’s feelings and self-motivation are greatly improved through forest activity. But control group has no difference.
So forest activity means much to growing children.

Application of forest activity is a good educational methods which enhance children’s emotional intelligence and has a very high value in educating children.
