The purpose of this study was to identify whether self-efficacy, ego-resilience, and self-esteem mediates in the relationship between parental attachment and interpersonal school adaptation as well as explore whether competitive interaction takes place between variables during the mediating process. In order to identify this, survey which consists of the 5 scales was conducted on 5th and 6th grade students in 2 elementary schools located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do. Amongst the 400 copies of the questionnaire, 345 copies of data were applied in the analysis to make verification through path analysis.
Following is the summarization of the major study results. First, when self-efficacy, ego-resilience, and self-esteem were simultaneously applied as mediating variables, self-efficacy and ego-resilience displayed mediating effects but self-esteem did not present mediating effects. However, when each were individually applied as mediating variables, all displayed mediating effects.
Therefore, it can be perceived that changes happened in the mediating effects of self-esteem as competitive interaction took place between self-efficacy, ego-resilience, and self-esteem, which applied as mediating variables in the relationship between parental attachment and interpersonal school adjustment.
The study result suggests a methodological direction for the enhancement of interpersonal adaptation with teacher and peers in school. According to the study results, secure attachment should initially be formed between parents and the child in order to enhance interpersonal school adaptation, and it is important to maintain affective connectedness. Moreover, it is effective to heighten ego-resilience, which enables for the possession of flexibility and resilience during stressful situations. Furthermore, it is considered necessary to increase self-efficacy, which stands as the conviction and confidence about one's abilities. The limitations of this study and discussion about further study direction were included.
