The study aimed to understand how the sand play therapy affects aggression and brainwave indexes (attention index, anti-stress index) of female juvenile delinquents in a youth detention center. Nowadays, the youth issues are being talked about everywhere in the society, and those issues are in danger of becoming adult crime. In particular, the aggression found in the adolescent period is supposed to be very much unstable and uncontrolled as it is described as some immature forms. As for the female juvenile delinquents in a youth detention center who were the participants of this study, an early, proper treatment should be conducted to prevent any redelinquency while the participants are provided with constant supports being studied in various fields. Hence, this study would discuss how the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center is described by the sand play therapy as well as how efficient the therapy is at reducing the aggression. In order to objectify the benefits of the sand play therapy, brainwave indexes during each session were measured to check any changes in those brainwave indexes related to the aggression.

The study has set research problems as follows.

    1. How would the sand play therapy reduce the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center?
    2. How would the sand play therapy change the brainwave indexes (attention index, anti-stress index) related to the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center?
    3. How would the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center be changed during the sand play therapy sessions?

With the help of a youth detention center in Gyeonggi-do, the study was carried out targeting an experiment group of nine female teenagers and a control group of nine regular female juvenile delinquents recommended by the detention center. The nine female teenagers in the detention center attended a total of 12 individual sand play therapy sessions for 60 minutes once a week from October to December in 2012. For Session 1 and Session 12, with self-report type Buss & Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI) applied, pre- and post-tests were conducted. In order to observe changes in the brainwave indexes for each session, brainwaves were measured before and after every ten sessions. The nine regular female juvenile teenagers from the control group were put into the pre- and the post-tests in October and December of 2012 with the self-report type BDHI applied. The pre- and post-brainwave measuring was also conducted two times. No sand therapy play was conducted.
In order to prove the benefits of the study, SPSS 18.0 Ver. was used for the statistics process. For the pre- and the post-test difference investigations on the aggression and the brainwave indexes (attention index, anti-stree index), a non-parametric method Wilcoxon Rank Sum-Test was conducted. A preliminary homogeneity analysis Mann-Whitney test on the aggression and the brainwave indexes (attention index, anti-stress index) of the experiment group and the control group was carried out. In addition, in order to improve the reliability of the statistical verification, the study carried out a quality analysis on details of sand boxes and counseling of the participants for each session with the topic of the aggression.
The results of the study are summarized as follows.

First, according to the results of the study to see if the sand play therapy reduces the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center, the factors other than the physical aggression came up with significant outcomes. This result proved the benefits of the sand play therapy to decrease the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the detention center.

Second, a research on how the sand play therapy influences the brainwave index of the female juvenile delinquents in the detention center was carried out. The results reported that the attention index (the left, the right) and the anti-stress index (the left and the right) would have significant outcomes. Such findings determined that the sand play therapy would change the brainwave indexes (the attention index, the anti-stress index) related to the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center.

Third, significant inner changes to the aggression of the female juvenile delinquents in the detention center were observed during the therapy sessions. It was learned that the delinquents in the study could get mentally relaxed as they described and released any suppressed aggressions in safe ways during the therapy.

The purpose of the study was to see if the sand play therapy works for the aggression and the brainwave indexes (the attention index, the anti-stress index) of the female juvenile delinquents in the youth detention center. As far as the study found out, the sand play therapy would reduce the aggression of the delinquents as it increases the brainwave indexes (the attention index, the anti-stress index) related to the aggression. In addition, the study also figured out that every participant in the therapy would go through significant inner changes to the aggression during the therapy sessions.
