This study is to understand the effect of extracurricular physical activities at school on middle school students’ anger and aggression in physical, psychological, and social transition period. To attain the purpose of this study, we have conducted surveys targeting 500 middle school students who are belonging certain middle schools in Seoul and participating in extracurricular physical activities at school. We drew on 427 respondents after taking out 73 disrespectful ones out of total 500 respondents. For a data analysis, we attempted a frequency analysis to investigate respondents’ general feature and participation in extracurricular physical activities at school and utilized the calculation of Cronbach‘s credibility reliability to reason student’s anger and aggression.
We conducted t-test and one-way ANOVA to understand the differences of anger and aggression between extracurricular participants and non-participants;
we also ranged the meaningful difference within 5% through Scheffe's multiple rangetest. Moreover, we implemented t-test to find out the difference of middle school student’s anger and aggression according to the different categories of extracurricular physical activities at school. Finally, we utilized a correlation analysis to understand the relationship between the anger and the aggression of middle school students.
The positive analysis result in this study is investigated in 5% significance level, and study’s statistics process analysis used program of SPSS WIN 18.0. Through the above research methods and procedures, we draw several research outcomes as followings:
First, we found out the correlation of middle school student’s anger and aggression according to the decision to participate of extracurricular physical activities at school; participation in extracurricular physical activities at school can affect not only middle school student’s anger but also their aggression. The non-participants showed more anger and aggression than the participants of extracurricular physical activities at school. This result showed that participation in extracurricular physical activities at school has significance effect on physical aggression and anger which are sub factor of the aggression in detail.
Second, in the case whose sexual identity is male, degree of physical aggression of students is higher than the case that whose sexual identity is female. The anger of aggression is the only factor that has the meaningful different result measured value by each grade; the list in first grade, third grade, and second grade order.
Third, a result in middle school student’s anger and aggression according to participation categories of extracurricular physical activities at school, there is meaningful difference the list in the anger-control of anger, in the team exercise, match exercise, and the individual exercise order.
Finally, as a result of the correlation between the extracurricular activities participants’ anger and aggression, it has a positive meaningful relationship with both anger-in and with anger-out which are aggression factors. Also, the physical aggression and the anger of aggression have a negative relationship with the anger-control.
Overall, the results are as followings: 1. Participation in extracurricular physical activities at school able to lead the physical aggression and anger. 2. There is a difference of physical aggression according to student's sexual identity. 3. There is a difference of anger of aggression to gradual stages. 4. The different kinds of participation categories of exercise effect to the anger-control. To sum up, we need to provide control methods to the middle school students who participate in extracurricular physical activities at school to self-control their physical aggression and anger in order not to lead anger-in or anger-out. To achieve these, the further study needs to find out the specific factor why the physical aggression and the anger appear among the middle school students who participate in extracurricular physical activities at school. Also, we need to develop various kinds of extracurricular physical activities at school in order to decrease the physical aggression and the anger throughout grasping the cause of expression of middle school students’ aggression and anger.
