ABSTRACT

Self-awareness, Other-awareness and Communication Ability in Nursing Students

Purpose: The purpose of this study is identifying the relationship among self-awareness, other-awareness and communication ability
Method: We got the convenience sample from 237 nursing students of various grade at three colleges in J city, using instruments of self-awareness, other-awareness, communication ability. We used Pearson's correlation analysis, independent sample T-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 12.0 for windows to analyze this data.
Results: There was a statistically significant difference a positive correlation between self-awareness and communication ability among the nursing students.
There was a statistical difference the correlation coefficient between other-awareness and communication ability, but the value was too small.
Those students who participated in the clinical practice and have a high level of academic achievement had the better communication ability than other students.
Social anxiety scale of nursing college students, private self-awareness, internal other-awareness, and three internal variables seemed respectively to affect the communication ability.
conclusion: In other to promote communication ability, nursing educators may need to take the course for the training methods to enhance self-awareness and other-awareness. In particular, this researcher feels the necessity of systematic and effective curriculum that can reflects the social anxiety, private self-awareness and internal other-awareness.
