This study was conducted to examine the difference in conformity types depending on group-norm perceptions and moral emotions. The study was carried by answering 3 questions.
Study question 1, what is gender difference on group-norm perceptions, moral emotion-shame, moral emotion-guilt, and defending and outsider behaviors?
Study question 2, what is gender relations in group-norm perceptions, moral emotion-shame, moral emotion-guilt, and defending and outsider behaviors?
Study question 3, what is effects of gender on group-norm perceptions, moral emotion-shame, emotion-guilt, and defending and outsider behaviors?
Data was collected by administering 3 questionnaires(group-norm perceptions, defending and outsider behaviors, and moral emotions such as shame and guilt test) to 273 participants who were 6th graders of 3 elementary schools students in Suji-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea from March 25 to April 1 in 2013. T-test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed to identify the gender difference of Group-norm perceptions and moral emotions on defending and outsider behaviors.
The results of the study were as follows;
First, gender had partial difference in group-norm perceptions, moral emotions. Among major factor according to gender, group-norm perceptions and defending behaviors had no difference but moral emotion-shame and guilt, and outsider behaviors had.
Second, in bullying situation, positive group-norm perceptions had negative correlation with defending behaviors, and positive relationship with outsider behaviors. Moral emotion-shame had positive relationship with defending behaviors, and negative correlation with outsider behaviors. Moral emotion-shame had positive relationship with guilt. These relationships applied to all students no matter what is gender. Gender and shame of students were meaningless to defending and outsider behaviors.
Third, students who had higher positive group-norm perceptions tend to do less defending behaviors in bullying situation without reference to gender. All students who had higher positive group-norm perception tend to do more outsider behaviors and who had higher moral emotions-guilt tend to do less outsider behaviors. Gender and shame of students were meaningless to defending and outsider behaviors.
According to these factors mentioned above, the meaning of the study were as follows;
First, development of guilt by purifying their emotion is significant.
Second, because positive group-norm perceptions affect outsider behaviors in bullying situation, establishment of rules and education about bullying in class are crucial.
Third, unrelatedness between defending and outsider behaviors and gender and shame of students shows individualism. Shame and different ways of thinking according to gender which existed in the East are nonexistent.
The study shows positive norm-group perceptions have negative correlation with defending behaviors and moral emotion-guilt have positive relationship. At the next time, it is expected to be studied that how to establish the effect way to educate student by researching social elements to deny positive group-norm perception and inner factors to waken moral emotion-guilt.
