As time passes, changes in languages mean that they do not have complete structures as well as the changes and the differences resulted from various reasons are natural. Although the regional dialects in some provinces are a result of transformation but they had disregarded because they were considered as a corruption discrepant from common language forms. Also, almost no one was willing to learn them.
However, a lot of media that are close to viewers frequently use the regional dialects so that the learners are quite positive to the transformed languages in comparison with the people in the past. Therefore, this study concentrates on these facts and emphasizes that teaching the regional tongue at schools needs to be altered according to the changes in understanding of the learners.
The education of the regional dialects was delivered to the students together with that of standard language, and its purpose is to internalize values and meanings of each type of language. Yet, the school education may highlight the status of the standard language, so the learners may have differentiated perception over the language. As a result, the importance of provincial language may be ignored.
In addition, in terms of the education of Korean language, it cannot be overlooked that the education of regional dialects has been in line only with the acquisition of knowledge as well as the audiences have been exposed to the regional dialects the media use and accepted them thoughtlessly. To make the students evenly understand the regional dialects as well as the standard language, educators should not lean toward only one of them and they have to help the learners accept them properly. Thus, this study targets secondary school students and leads them to instill the values and the meaning of the regional dialects through diverse and meaningful experiences regarding them. Also, this research helps the learners to have right attitudes about the language and seeks the effective educating methods to let the learners enjoy the creative lives with language.
In second chapter, we set the relation between the standard languages and the regional dialects by examining their concepts and features and establish theoretical bases. Furthermore, we take a close look at the correlation of regional dialects and the attitudes toward the language, checking the discussion on the attitudes.
In the next chapter, by clearing up the educational meanings, we assure that the regional dialect education has justifications and identify the connection of that education in each class reflected to the revised curriculum in 2007. Moreover, we critically analyze 7 Korean textbooks and 7 texts of Korean in daily lives, and the results become the guidelines of the regional dialect education.
Based on this, the chapter four contains the contents for the education and maps out the teaching procedures that effectively aid the students to learn the basic knowledge and attitudes of the regional dialects by reconstructing the courses to match with the regional dialect education, utilizing a variety of teaching-learning models. Additionally, we could see the positive changes of the learners, which is resulted from the demonstration of the educational influences of teaching-learning plans.
This research also reveals that the teaching methods that are suggested after reviewing the effects of respective materials and activities on the education can be used efficiently at schools and for follow-up studies.
It rejects the current teaching-learning methods that concentrating on the acquisition of conceptual knowledge about the regional dialects by using the teaching materials far from the lives of learners, thus it seeks for the ways of educating the students to have appropriate attitudes as well as to understand that the regional dialects are precious cultural assets of Korea through interesting and educational experiences.
In comparison with the previous studies that stress normative recognition about all types of Korean, this study is highly meaningful. Also, it has a value because it gives the chances to reevaluate the local words that had been excluded in Korean classes so that it enhances the status of the regional dialects. Additionally, by applying the educating methods suggested in this study to schools and proving their effects, the meaning of this research can be acknowledged in that it finds the possibility to change the learners in positive ways.
