First, what is the level of internet addition of male university students?
Second, is there any difference in academic achievement depending on the level of internet addition?
Third, is there any difference in maladjustment to university life depending on the level of internet addition?
Fourth, what is an effect of internet addition and academic achievement on maladjustment to university life?
408 copies of questionnaire was distributed by targeting 408 persons of male university students currently attending 4-year-course universities located at Seoul, Gangwon, Chungnam, Chungbuk for this study and 358 copies among total collected 408 copies excluding 50 copies of which response was insincere was recovered and used for an analysis.
In order to measure the level of internet addition, a simple scale of self-diagnosis for internet addition by adults (National Information Society Agency, 2011) was used and in order to measure academic achievement, grade point average (GPA) of just previous semester was directed to write down in a form of self-report. Measuring tool of Choi, Eun-gu (2007) who modified university life maladjustment scale developed by Kim, Jeong-gi, Gang, Yeon-wuk and Choi, Myeong-shik (1998) for measuring maladjustment of university life as 1-4 points Likert scale was used.
SPSS 18.0 program was used for analyzing collected questionnaires of this study. General traits of male university students were estimated by frequency and percentage and in order to identify a difference of internet addition level depending on general traits of male university students, χ2 test was used. In order to explore a difference of academic achievement and university life maladjustment depending on the level of internet addition, one-way ANOVA and Duncun test for post verification were carried out. In addition, in order to investigate a correlation among internet addition, academic achievement and university life maladjustment, product-moment correlation analysis of Pearson was performed and in order to identify an effect of internet addition and academic achievement on university life maladjustment, stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed.
The result of this research is as followings.
First, the level of internet addiction for university men students refers to 16 persons (4.5%) in higher risk user group, and 54 persons (15%) in potential risk user group, and 288 persons (80.5%) in general user group, and the rate of internet addiction for university men students is high as 19.5%, and it is known that the response group of internet use over 5 hours and the internet use motive because of excitement is high in the rate of internet addiction.
Second, there are the differences of academic achievement according to the level of internet addiction. In other words, it is known that the academic achievement is low in higher risk user group.
Third, there are the differences of the maladjustment of university life according to the level of internet addiction. This is indicated that the higher risk user group has higher loss of self-confidence, bad health condition, higher difficulty of attention and anti-social trend, and higher maladjustment of university life.
Fourth, the explanation ability about the internet addiction and academic achievement effect on the maladjustment of university life is 12%, and the explanation ability indicated that the internet addiction and academic achievement effect on the low factor of maladjustment of university life is 11% in the loss of self-confidence, 3% in health condition, 14% in the difficulty of attention, 2% in consciousness/anti-social trend, and internet addiction influences a significant static effect on maladjustment of university life and low factor of maladjustment of university life but the academic achievement does not influence a significant static effect on maladjustment of university life and low factor of maladjustment of university life. Thus, it is indicated that internet addiction is higher, the loss of self-confidence and difficulty of attention is higher and the health condition is worse and anti-social trend is higher, and the maladjustment of university life is higher.
Through this result, it is known that internet addiction effects on academic achievement and maladjustment of university life, and it is meaningful to observe the psychological dimensions such as the loss of self-confidence, the difficulty of attention, physical health dimension, and social and ethical dimension such as consciousness/anti-social trend and overall various dimensions of maladjustment of university life.
