The purpose of this study was to investigate psychological mechanism by which emotional intelligence and prosocial behaviors mediate the relation between mother attachment and children's emotional well-being.
Specifically, the process presumed and analyzed as to whether it has significance was that mother attachment have effect on emotional intelligence, emotional intelligence on prosocial behaviors, and prosocial behaviors on emotional wellbeing successively. For empirically test the causality of this process, structural equation modeling method was used.
A total of 388 students attending elementary school in Kyung-gi province or in Seoul was set as target sample, and completed the questionnaire. An equal number of data was used to verify the structural equation model.
The main results of this study would be summarized as follows. At first, it was proved that mother attachment is a variable strongly affecting emotional wellbeing. Secondly, emotional intelligence was identified as a dominant factor arousing prosociality of children. At last, it has been verified that intelligence and prosocial behaviors have consecutive mediation effect in the relation between mother attachment and children's emotional well-being, therefore could predict them.
Abovementioned results suggest the direction which therapeutic interventions in counseling for students displaying lacking of emotional wellbeing would take. According to the findings of this study, it could be effective to focus on the affection towards parents when dealing with students showing lacking of emotional wellbeing. Also, if inducing children to use themselves' emotional intelligence and to behave prosocially through emotional approach, it could be possible for children's well-being to be improved.
Limitations of the study and suggestions for further studies are included.
