The purposes of this study were to examine therapists' expertise level with aromatherapy at spas and investigate the uses and side effect experiences of essential oil according to the types. For those purposes, the investigator surveyed 250 therapists at resort, hotel, medical and day spas across the nation through personal visit and by mail. The major results of the self-administered survey were as follows:
First, 71.2% of the therapists at spas had experiences of receiving aromatherapy education, while 28.8 had no such experiences, which indicates that a good number of therapists received no aromatherapy education. The subjects scored low 4.66 points(full 10) on the expertise level related to the safe uses of essential oil. The most frequent venue where they received aromatherapy education was "college"(36.6%), which was followed by "professional educational institution"(26.1%), "company of the product"(27.5%), and "others"(9.8%) in the order.
Second, the highest 49.3% of the subjects considered the influence of essential oil on the body when choosing essential oil; 23.3% considered whether essential oil was organic or not; 20.5% considered fragrance preference; 4.2% considered the prices; and 2.8% considered others. The highest 45.3% had complaints with quality that had not been proven and prices when choosing essential oil at spas, which raises a need for the sound distribution system of aroma products that are safe and whose quality is proven.
Third, as for the perceptions of aromatherapy application techniques, the highest 56.7% chose "massage" for effective skin care, 35.8% "bath" for effective stress relief, and 64.2% "massage" for effective muscle pain relief. As for the usual massage method for aromatherapy, the highest 42.3% used "Swedish massage." As for the blending method for aromatherapy care, the highest 34.9% said that they used "blended oil."
Fourth, while 64.5% of the therapists had no experiences with abnormal symptoms after aromatherapy care, 35.5% had such experiences. As for the types of abnormal symptoms experienced by therapists, "headache" and "drowsiness and languidness" were the highest at 63.9%; "dizziness and vertigo" at 54.2%; "nausea and vomiting" at 52.8%; "fatigue" and "dry skin and itchiness" at 41.7%; "tension and sensitivity" at 40.3%; "tightness on the chest" at 38.9%; "attention disorder" and "rubefaction and rash" at 34.7%; and "pigmentation" at 19.4% in the order. As for reactions to experiences of abnormal symptoms, the highest 40.3% "stopped using the essential oil"; 22.2% "replaced the essential oil with another"; 16.7% "did others"; 15.3% "waited for natural treatment while continuing to use the essential oil"; and 5.6% "got treatment at the hospital" in the order.
Fifth, as for customers' experiences with abnormal symptoms after aromatherapy care, 72.9% said that customers had no such experiences, whereas 27.1% said that customers had such experiences. As for a patch test for customer safety, 48.4% conducted no patch test; 30.7% conducted a patch test often; and 20.9% never missed a patch test. Nearly a half of the subjects carried out no patch test for customer safety. As for ventilation at a spa, the highest 40.0% used "windows" for ventilation, and only 29.8% used "air purifiers" for ventilation.
Finally, logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the factors influencing experiences with aromatherapy education. As a result, those who had a career of "5-10 years" had 3.3 times higher experiences with aromatherapy education compared with those who had a career of "less than 2 years." Those who had a career of "more than 10 years" also had 3.3 times higher experiences with aromatherapy education compared with those who had a career of "less than 2 years." Such variables as age, position, and education experience had statistically significant influence on their expertise level of essential oil. The knowledge level was lower in those who were in their "forties" than those who were in their "twenties or younger." The knowledge level was higher among the "directors" and "staffs" than among "assistants" and among those who "had education experiences" than those who "had no such experiences."
Those findings shows an urgent need for professional educational programs and systematic researches on the safe uses of aromatherapy since the spa therapists had a very low knowledge level of aromatherapy and relatively higher rates of side effects. It is also required to establish a safe and reliable distribution network of aroma products, perform a patch test to prevent side effects in relation to aromatherapy, and set up a ventilation system for further improvements.
