This study was designed to investigate the effect of Admissions Officer System on private English education. After reviewing whether Admissions Officer System had reduced demand of private English education for high school students, this study presented and suggested the way of reduction of private English educational demand. The specific research questions were as follows:
First, is there a significant influence of Admissions Officer System on the school records of the English subject, the level of College Scholastic Ability Test, and the official English language ability?
Second, what is the current situation of private English education of high school students?
Third, how much do students depend on private English education for preparing Admissions Officer System?
Fourth, what do high school students think of the way of reducing private English educational demand?
This study was conducted from September 2011 to November 2012. To accomplish the purpose of this study, it used survey as quantitative research with 255 students from three randomly selected high schools located in Gyeonggi province and 30 students from 2013 KCUE UNIVERSITY FAIR which was held in COEX from 26 to 29 July 2012. In addition, in order to supplement the result of the survey, interviews were used as qualitative research with three third graders who applied for Admissions Officer System.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, among the four factors(school records of English subject, level of College Scholastic Ability Test in foreign language part, official language ability score and English interview) the school records of English subject and level of College Scholastic Ability Test were considered the most important factors in Admissions Officer System itself. However, the students who applied for Admissions Officer System considered official language ability score and other factors which can be done from outside of school were the most important factors to get admissions from universities.
Second, 68.8% out of total respondents participated in private education and students who were preparing for Admissions Officer System showed higher participation rate than the students who were not. Also, 69.4% out of respondents who were participating in private education answered they took private English education. Students who were preparing for Admissions Officer System showed less participation rate than the students who were not in the private English education.
Third, it was revealed that both of the students who prepare and do not prepare for the Admissions Officer System have much private English education. That is, the Admissions Officer System does not significantly influence private English education.
Fourth, in terms of students' perspectives on reducing private English education, they considered that universities need to eliminate official language ability score and other factors which can be done from outside of school as Admissions Officer Systems' evaluation factors.
After referring to analysis and results, some suggestions can be made to improve University Admissions Officer System and reduce private English education.
First, each university need to clarify its' evaluation factors of Admissions Officer System to applicants. Also according to the guideline for Admissions Officer System by Korea Council for University Education(KCUE) each university makes an effort not to ask other factors which can be done from outside of school as Admissions Officer Systems' evaluation factors.
Second, Admissions Officer System need to develop its evaluation tools which involve qualitative data instead of quantitative data. For example, lowering minimum level of College Scholastic Ability Test score and accepting more non-subject factors would be effective for decreasing private English education.
Third, universities should limit their applicants' requirement to students who graduated from domestic highschool.
This study suggested alternative ways to reduce private English education which can be occurred by Admissions Officer System. For reducing private English education, research on this subject should be carried out consistently.
