To determine basic life habits, acknowledgement of physical activities, physical condition, physical fitness and happiness of elementary school students, this study was proceeded with questionnaire toward 161 of 4th, 5th and 6th graders living in a K city.
With total of 78 questions, the questionnaire consists of 4 areas, each of which was separated into sub-factors. The survey was analyzed by a 5-point scale system, and the main results are as shown below.
First, as a result of categorizing and investigating daily lives of each grader, to examine the features of daily habits for each grader, from the waking-up time to the bed time in detail, 4th and 5th graders had comparatively late waking-up time and home time and, they had less free time and spent much more time on studying. 6th graders woke up early, their home time and homecoming time were late, and their sleeping time and studying time were short. Within genders, male students spent more time on using computers but less time on studying, while female students spent less time on using computers but more time on studying.
Second, in areas of physical activities and physical fitness, 4th and 5th graders preferred physical activities more than 6th graders did, and rather than female students, male students enjoyed physical activities. In most areas, 4th and 5th graders had better physical condition than 6th graders had.
Third, in the area of physical fitness, 6th graders had better flexibility, balance, agility and the physical fitness index.
Fourth, in most areas within the happiness index, 4th and 5th graders had higher happiness index, and male students had higher index than female students had.
In conclusion, the younger the students, the more care and custody from parents, thus regular daily lives. And the higher the grade of students, the later the homecoming time due to extracurricular studies and the shorter the sleeping time, leading students to have irregular daily lives and late wake-up time. Since 6th graders maintain irregular daily life styles and have overall poor condition for a day, it is considered that they prefer not to perform physical activities.
