The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect that mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme have on children's mathematical concept and cognition and preference about traditional culture.
The research questions of this study are as follows :
1. How do the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme have an effect on children's mathematical concept?
2. How do the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme have an effect on children's cognition about traditional culture?
3. How do the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme have an effect on children's preference about traditional culture?
Subjects of this research were selected for 51 young children of 5 years old in two classes at a kindergarten located in Incheon City with
26 members in the experiment group and 25 members in the comparison group. The Procedure of this research is composed of the sequence of the experiment plan, tester discipline, preliminary test, prior test, experiment execution, posterior test, data analysis. To investigate the mathematical concept of the infant at the prior test and posterior test, I used the infant drawing mathematical competency test tool of Hwang Hae-ik and Choi Hye-jin (2007). The infant drawing mathematical competency test tool consists of 4 subordinate categories: algebra, numbers and calculation, geometry, measurement. To measure children's cognition and preference about traditional culture, I used the test tool of the cognition and preference about traditional culture that Jeon Kyung-hwa(2001) devised and Baek hui-suk(2006) revised and complemented. It is composed of 6 subordinate categories: clothing life, eating life, housing life, cultural assets, traditional play, traditional arts.
Experiment executions were carried out for 6 weeks from September 19, 2011 to October 28, 2011. To the experiment group, the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme were carried out and the educational activities of the comparison group were chiefly composed of the educational tools handling numbers related to the life subjects and board game.
To investigate the effect of the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme, the posterior test was carried out in the same way with the prior test.
The data collected from the prior test and the posterior test were taken the statistics using the SPSS WIN19.0 program.
The summary of the findings is as follows:
First, this study showed that the children of experiment group who experienced the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme statistically improved more than the children of the comparison group in the mathematical concept of the algebra, numbers and calculation, geometry, measurement.
Second, this study showed that the children of experiment group who experienced the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme statistically improved more than the children of the comparison group in the cognition about traditional culture of the clothing life, eating life, housing life, cultural assets, traditional play, traditional arts.
Third. this study showed that the children of experiment group who experienced the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme statistically improved more than the children of the comparison group in the preference about traditional culture of the clothing life, housing life, cultural assets, traditional play, traditional arts. But there wasn't meaning improvement in the eating life.
This findings indicates that the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme are very effective on the improvement of mathematical concept and cognition about traditional culture, but partly effective on the improvement of preference about traditional culture, In conclusion, this study shows that the mathematical activities through traditional nursery rhyme are worth using positively not only for the improvement of mathematical concept but also for the cognition and preference about traditional culture.
