The purpose of this study is to present physical activity programs of humanistic approach as an improvement to the problem of traditional teaching in an elementary physical education. This study has been conducted targeting high jump among distance challenge activities. It has analyzed learner behaviors after setting the criterion of physical activities of 'power to control', 'power to maintain' and 'power to muster up' targeting learners applying high jump class through a humanistic approach.
One class of the fifth grade in 'O' elementary school in Cheongwon-gun has been selected and the distance challenging classes were conducted through a humanistic approach applying 3-week 8 classes of the physical education formation of the 2007 revised education curriculum. The classes have been video-taped and the qualitative study was conducted using a triangulation through document analysis applying learner behavior analysis, in-depth interviews and teaching and learning plan.
The learner behavior analysis of distance challenging class through a humanistic approach in the above process is as follows.
First, the records have been improved through the effective control of the power in order to switch kinetic energy to potential energy and the kinetic energy has been generated through run-up in the take-off of the high jump.
The learners who did the overall understanding of the high jump and the learning of take-off first for the effective control of the power, not the part learning of run-up - take-off - motions in the air - landing, feel a greater interest in the activities of the high jump and their records were improved. The effective take-off depends on the reaction force by ground reacting force, the climbing power by changes of the angle of the body segments, the setting of the optimal angle for leaping of each physical movement, etc. It has been recognized as the most important value that the success or failure of the technique of take-off is determined by the 'power control' through the actions such as 'vigorously stepping by rolling feet', 'bending down and unfolding knees and waist', 'kicking up with leaping feet together with both arms', 'finding optimal angle for leaping themselves', etc. among learners actions analyzed in this study.
Second, the records have been improved by effectively keeping the center of gravity and potential energy which was converted through take-off in motions in the air to in the high jump.
The learners have shown the actions such as 'kicking up with a front foot', 'pulling a back foot', etc. in order to maintain potential energy which was converted through take-off. These actions have effectively maintained the center of gravity of the body. In addition, the effective motion in the air is to minimize the free height, that is, the difference between the highest position of the center of gravity and the bar. It is recognized as the most important value that the success or failure of the motions in the air is determined by ''the maintenance of the power'.
Third, the records has been improved by the effective mustering up of power to get the kinetic energy in the run-up in the high jump.
The effective run-up is to exert the maximum kinetic energy through the maximum horizontal velocity of the Newton's law (f = ma). To obtain these power appeared through the actions such as 'determining the proper stride', 'determining the appropriate steps', etc among learners behaviors analyzed in this study. It is recognized as the most important value that the success or failure of the run-up technique is determined by 'power to muster up'.
In conclusion, distance challenge activity classes through humanistic approach had positive impacts in terms of improving the learner's ability to perform the high jump game.
