This study aims to investigate the effects of different types of written corrective feedback on elementary school learners' English writing across different proficiency levels. The research questions are as follows.
First, how do students respond to different types of written corrective feedback in their revision writing?
Second, how do students respond to different categories of errors in their revision writing?
Third, how effective are different types of corrective feedback in the learners' follow-up writing?
Forth, how do students understand and react to the written corrective feedback?
To investigate these questions, I divided four classes of 6th grade into high-level and low-level groups and provided them with written corrective feedback. The effect of different types of feedback was analyzed in terms of how students applied direct feedback and indirect feedback to their writing. The errors were categorized into five based upon the frequent errors made by the students such as verb errors, possessive/plural errors, word choice errors, sentence structure errors, and punctuation/capitalization errors.
In collecting data, I gathered 824 students' first drafts and revision writings, 332 long-term writings, questionaire surveys and interviews. These data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively as well. The results of the data analysis are shown below.
First, high-level students conducted successfully in their revision writing in terms of both direct and indirect feedback, whereas low-level students performed less successfully regarding indirect feedback. The cases of low-level students' failure of revision writing on indirect feedback were analyzed due to such as overlooking the feedback, the lack of grammar knowledge, misunderstanding the English feedback as direct correction and overgeneralization of the feedback.
Second, considering the error types, high-level students could revise correctly regardless of the different categories of errors, whereas low-level students showed relatively less successful correction in verb errors and possessive/plural errors compared to other categories in their revision writing.
Third, the findings of this study about long-term effect indicated that high-level students showed improvement in their long-term writing in terms of possessive/plural errors and punctuation/capitalization, and they performed more successfully to indirect feedback than to direct feedback. Compared to the high-level students, low-level students showed improvement in no category of errors. However in terms of the type of feedback, they also performed better to indirect feedback with explanation about the errors or rules of the language.
Forth, the questionaire survey and interviews showed that the students all wanted to receive feedback on their future writing from teachers. Furthermore, they found themselves more confident and interested in writing in English while going through the process of receiving feedback and revision writing. To the matter of the types of feedback, high-level students responded they prefer indirect feedback because it empowers them to correct errors themselves, and it makes them feel more capable. On the contrary, low-level students responded they prefer direct feedback for the reason that they can be sure about the correction.
The results of the present study conclude and suggest the following in terms of providing effective feedback to the elementary students' writing. For high level-students, indirect feedback would be effective from the points of empowering them to self-correct the errors and providing them with the opportunity of accomplishment in their writing. For low-level students, direct feedback would be more effective for their revision writing, and explanation about the errors or feedback would be needed along with the correction. Moreover, providing feedback needs to be practiced differently based on the error types whether they are rule-governed or not. In conclusion, feedback needs to be provided to students' writing considering their writing proficiency levels as well as the type of errors.
