Fast changing modern society compared to the past played a role to promote development in Information and Communications and the dissemination of digital media. A good number of wars, terror and disasters occurred in these changes and victims from them are striving to live with horrible memories. Also, as many of them are repetitively exposed to media, modern people are living with anxiety that might happen to them whenever. Accordingly, our contemporaries are suffering from anxiety state such as psychological and mental external injuries, in short trauma. Furthermore it is usually concealed in unconsciousness due to suppression that brought about negative emotion in the past. Trauma had been studied in many fields and it has a great effect on healing modern people’s psychological anxiety state in Freudianism.
This trauma is utilized as a material and topic in the field of arts. Especially, creative work of dance named 『Scars on Memory』 was choreographed with trauma. Therefore, this study is analyzed based on Sigmund Freud’s the phenomenon of Trauma by topic and contents, stage composition by scenes, dancer’s flow pattern and movement and the image of the lighting.
First, this work‘s subject is to show that even if people go through trauma, they can finally cope with it. Also, this work is composed of three scenes by contents. This work‘s scene 1 is to reveal hidden trauma in unconsciousness as well as to express the aspect of escaping from it. Scene 2 is on the memories of trauma and the trauma can be looked into by switching trauma as consciousness also, it was intended to show up all sorts of emotions fettered by trauma. From the last scene 3, the positive aspect of conquering trauma turns up through the appearance of unconsciousness that trauma vanished.
Second, this work is set up by dividing spatial area of its stage and Freud’s psychoanalysis was applied into it. The whole stage area was set as human being’s mental activity, both of the outside of stage as ‘consciousness’ and the center of the stage as ‘unconsciousness’, the area between the outside and middle of the stage as ‘preconsciousness’. Besides, ‘unconsciousness’ space is only used in scene 1 and 3 and ‘consciousness’ and‘preconsciousness’ space are only used in scene 2 by the contents of this work.
Third, dancer's flow pattern and movement is restricted in set spatial area of its stage by each scene. Above all, the maximum of flow pattern and the high state of movement in scene 1, repetitive flow pattern and movement in scene 2, fianlly, the minimum of flow pattern and the low state of movement were employed. In this way, flow pattern and movement that are contrasted even in the same area and repetitive flow pattern and movement were inteded to emphasize.
Fourth, the images of the lightings are differently utilized according to area properly set by each scene. Scene 1 and 3 use the red-round-typed overhead spot lighting which has the meaning of both hurt and cure. Scene 1 implies the hurt from Trauma and a red color that signifies cure was utilized in Scene 3. In Scene 2, four lightings of the road were used in Scene and it was for highlighting as in a series of dancer's flow pattern and movement to indicate everything from the memories. Lastly, at the part of climax, all lightings from all sections were used to lead to the zenith moment of this work.
Accordingly, in dance creative work called 『Scars On Memory』, the appearance of the modern people who have trauma and the positive form that people overcome trauma were articulated at the same time. In addition, from the modern people who always suffer from the anxiety with a great deal of danger, the negative aspect with many problems of modern society can be seen. Furthermore, appearing positive future was intended with subjugation of trauma.
