This study examined the relationship of among impulsiveness, social skill, and depression of adolescents. The data analysis of 597 adolescents indicates that social skill exhibited the effect of mediating on the relation of impulsiveness on depression.
The major research results are as follows,
First, the T-test showed varing results across male and female. For examples, for male adolescents have higher self-regulation skill than female adolescents. For female adolescents, the results showed that adolescents are more depressive than male adolescents.
Second, analysis of relationships among the major variances has revealed that they are positively correlated. For male adolescents, assertion was the most highly negatively related variance of depression while it was self-control for female adolescents.
Third, the examination of the existence of structural relationship among the major variances showed that the impulsiveness has a direct path to the depression. At the same time, it also has a meaningful path to assertion, empathy and self control, which leads to the depression by mediating them.
Fourth, for male adolescents the examination of the existence of structural relationship among the major variances showed that the impulsiveness has a direct path to the depression. At the same time, it also has a meaningful path to assertion, which leads to the depression by mediating it. On the other hand for female adolescents showed that the impulsiveness has a direct path to the depression. At the same time, it also has a meaningful path both to assertion and self-control, which leads to the depression by mediating them.
These results showed that psychological variables should be included and examined in designing a social skill program in order to control effectively the level of impulsiveness. Finding in this study also exhibited the direction for future research of social skill program for impulsive adolescents in utilizing psychological variables.
