The purpose of this dissertation is to verify the effect for maternal rearing of infant in accordance with the lecture method or with the approach by individual concern in the method of parental education. To achieve the purpose of this study as mentioned, this dissertation establishes subjects of inquiry as follows:
1. Are the feelings of maternal rearing effect for infant different in accordance with the teaching methods of parental education?
2. Are the stresses of maternal rearing for infant different in accordance with the teaching methods of parental education?
3. Are the knowledge of maternal rearing for infant different in accordance with the teaching methods of parental education?
4. Are the expressions of emotion at home in maternal rearing for infant different in accordance with the teaching methods of parental education?
The object of this study is forty parents in 'w' city who have infant children, and these parents were divided into two groups for the method of approach, 2 instructor-led groups and 2 individualized approach groups. They got 8 parental education lessons for their ways of methods.
To measure the effect for maternal care of infants according to the ways of parental education, Choi, Hyung-seong's developmental tools apposite to the Korean case, which were based on the extracted questions from the experimental criteria of Allen(1993), Teti and Gelfand(1991), and Shin, Sook-jae(1997) were conducted of the testing tools for the feelings of maternal rearing effects. The tools for examining stresses for maternal rearing were used by Kim, Hyun-mi's translation(2004) of Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF, 1990) by Abidin(1st Ed., 1983). Testing tools for rearing knowledge were employed in Yoon, Hyung-ju's translation(2002) of Larsen and Juhasz's Knowledge of Child Development Inventory(1986) and the co-published General Support Programs for Parenting by Jeju local education locality and the ministry of education, science and technology(Ryu, Ji-hu et al, 2008) were referred to make the program firsthand. And the tools for the expressions of emotion at home are conducted by the translation of Yeo, Eun-jin(2009) for Self-expressiveness in the Family Questionnaire(SEFQ) designed by Halberstadt, Cassidy, Stifter, Parke, & Fox(1995). Collected data from this study was used for the average, standard deviation, and the analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) by the use of SPSS Window 12.0 programs.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, parental education method through the approach by individual concern is significantly higher in the whole feelings for the effect of matenal rearing and in the subordinate factors like general feelings for the effect of rearing, like healthy nursing ability for child, like communication and instuction ability, as comparing with the lecture method.
Second, the approach by individual concern is significantly lower in the whole stresses of maternal rearing and in the subordinate factors like the causes of pains, as compared with the lecture method.
Third, the approach by individual concern is significantly higher in the knowledges of rearing compared with the instructor-led approach.
And in the fourth, the approach by individual concern is significantly higher for the expressions of maternal feelings at home in the subordinate factors of positive expressions compared with the lecture method.
From these analyses, parental education methods through the approach by individual concern which is fit for personal characteristics and needs for each mother is more effective in the feeling of effect for maternal rearing, rearing stresses, rearing knowledge, and in the maternal expressions for emotions.
Up to date, most programs for parental education had been conducted by focusing on the contents of parental education and on the verification for the effect, this dissertation has the important meaning for suggesting the effect for the methods of parental educations by comparing the effect between the approach by individual concern which takes regard of individual mother's characteristics and requests and generally used lecture method. Results from these investigation may be the basic references to provide the practical methods of parental education for promoting the efficiencies of parental education.
