This study was a basic research for the assessment model of high school and intended to develop a school learning environment assessment checklist. The research results on the influence and impact of school learning environment factors were investigated and previous survey research were implemented. Those data were used to construct an assessment factors, and objective checklist problems. The previous survey research were conducted from March to June 2009 for all high school in Korea. The purpose of that is to develop some unique curriculums and the possibility of appling learning environment factors extracted from literature analysis. Total 851 high schools(38%) were responded to the survey among 2,225 high schools. The contents of school profiles were analyzed for some irresponsive high school and the important changes to the school environments since 2009.
The results of analysis of previous survey research and school profile shows some features: integrated essay curriculum, individual career guidance curriculum, curriculum connecting with neighborhood community, curriculum connecting with university, advanced learning curriculum, specialty subject curriculum, learning promoting system, efforts promoting system, leadership curriculum, personality education, artistic activities, sports activities, school curriculum focusing on the arts and physical education, bilingual education, AP, IB, preparation courses for overseas universities, Model United Nations activities, foreign cultural exchange activites, intensive english curriculum, R&E(Research & Education), advanced science education programs, invention/robot education programs, intensive science curriculum.
The learning environment assessment factors and questions were organized with 25 factors and 136 questions through literature reviews, previous survey research results, and analysis of some school profiles. The ‘leadership of school principal’ was an important factor for assessment of learning environment, but was eliminated because of difficulties of the way of assessment. The individual-level product factors like grade or achievement results and school-level or class-level product factors like the ratio of graduation or admission, school output or performance results were excluded from the assessment factors. Those factors may be input or process elements in the other aspect, but related research results are very few in number. The developed assessment factors were fell into the two-way conceptual frame with psychosocial-physical-IT environments and individual-class-school level environments.
19 professors with education major participated in the 1st experts review, which was used for revision of the developed assessment factors and questions. The psychosocial-physical-IT environment turned to input-process environment in the assessment region. 5 were eliminated out of 25 assessment factors and 4 integrated into 2 factors. Total 18 factors were modified. 63 were deleted ouf of 136 assessment questions, 14 were ruled out after integrating. Total 56 questions were modified. 3 original questions were intact and 21 questions were added. 1st expert review led to 18 assessment factors and 80 asssessment questions.
14 professors with education major, 9 admissions officers, and 7 high-school teachers participated in the 2nd experts review. Total 7 education expert professors took part in 1st and 2nd experts reviews. The ‘reliability’ assessment factors were eliminated because of the lack of theoretical background. The assessment questions was finally confirmed through the measure of content validity ratio(CVR) after 2nd experts review. The questions with the below minimum CVR, .33 were ruled out. Even though the questions had above minimum CVR, if there are similar questions, unclear meanings, unreality, those questions were eliminated. Through the process, 32 were removed out of 80 assessment questions and 33 questions were modified. 15 original questions were intact and 22 questions were added. Finally, 17 assessment factors and 70 questions were developed. The applicability of final assessment checklist was confirmed through the pilot test with 11 sample high school.
Final 17 school learning environment assessment factors are regarded as the basic elements of the best school. The 70 assessment questions can be used for more objective assessment and this checklist has advantages of minimize the loss of information while making grade in the assessment process. The school learning environment assessment checklist of this study gives every high school the standards of the ideal best school, which led to the continuous significant improvement of school learning environment rather than the inspection for educational policy or comparisons with other high schools.
