In the viewpoint of material, the picture plane of canvas is a kind of surface. So, even when an image of space is drawn in a picture plane, a picture plane is remained in the condition of surface. Modernism insisted to have to preserve the planar condition corresponding with materiality of canvas in any case according to the viewpoint that canvas is a plane in the aspect of material. But canvas is not only based on flatness. We feel infinite space when we see a empty canvas. It is similar to see sky without cloud. The difference between empty sky and a picture plane is that empty space could be identified with action of body but the picture plane of canvas couldn't be testified by metric or tactual method. Then, canvas may has a different kind of spatiality. The spatiality is built in only the visual domain. Hence, it differs from representational spatiality. Because the spatiality involved in a picture plane exists itself while representational spatiality similar to be shown in Renaissance painting has outer space to be able to be compare with a picture drawn on canvas. We could call the former as virtual space.
The virtual space of canvas is space that a painter has met frequently in a process drawing on canvas since long before. Although the aspect, a painter tried to suppress or exclude the dependent virtual space of canvas existing naturally to secure an expressional intention of his own whether representational or subjective expression. Inherent character, however, does not disappear by with turn one's face intentionally. A picture is not only the combination of planar images, but also reveals virtual space behind the scenes by expression. So, expression has to be made joining both material plane and virtual space. For developing it extensionally, this researcher reviewed and analyzed data derived from my experience and various documental data included history of Art, philosophy, Quantum physics, and so on. Through the study, the double spatiality of a picture plane was reveled to be intermittent and move crossing each other. Besides, this researcher cognized that a picture plane pulsates voluntarily with the spatiality of canvas by nonlinear expression. And, four directions is made to visualize the possibility through work.
The first direction is of expression using contradictional relation of space. In the kind of works, dynamic pulsation was derived from the picture plane that space twisted like Mobius strip was made by
to be formed conflicting relation of space through the reverse of linear positions.
The second direction is of expression using edge. In the kind of works, material planes and virtual spaces crossed on the edge by a face meet a face with strong contrast. The picture plane undulates whole by interweaving of two factors.
The third direction is of expression using blank space. This researcher generated uneven feature of time by combination of forms and blank spaces with material flatness and virtual spatiality in various aspect. By that, pulsative motion linked with forms and blank spaces is emerged in canvas.
The fourth direction is of expression using colors in conflicting relation. This researcher made to be derived multiple strata from the picture plane by expression which the physiological spatiality of each color and the positional spatiality of each form met with discordance. Hence, the fluctuating pulsation of canvas is deployed also in space of viewer by the aspect.
In this dissertation, this researcher aimed to show that the material plane and virtual space involved in canvas is evolved various pulsations with motions derived from expression combining plastic factors in nonlinear ways.
