Ganggangsullae is a Korean folk song, dance, and game which involves many types of games while singing and dancing in a circle holding hands and association with others.
By understanding how Ganggangsullae affects the self-conception and social development of elementary school students and studying how it affects the pro-social activity of children with development delays in integrated classrooms, the study aimed at recognizing anew the need for Ganggangsullae instruction which is presented in the majority of elementary school curriculums. At the same time, the study aimed at confirming the educational value of Ganggangsullae in connection with its status of being a game in the educational field, a song and a dance, and also aimed at directly realizing this at the site of the school. To meet these aims, the study established the following research hypotheses.
Research hypothesis 1. The self-conception between the Ganggangsullae participant group and non-participant group will show differences.
Research hypothesis 2. The degree of social development between the Gang-gang-sul-lae participant group and non-participant group will show differences.
Research hypothesis 3. The pro-social activity of children with developmental delays in an integrated educational environment will show a difference before and after the education.
To verify these hypotheses, research was conducted by utilizing experimental design on a comparative group and pre to post examination on a heterogeneous group by arbitrarily composing an experimental group of thirty students and a comparative of 30 students out of 60 students at elementary school W located in Suwon, Gyeonggi.
The study recreated eight types of Ganggangsullae plays, conducted this a total of 16 times to the experimental group, and compared the results in the subdivisions of self-conception, sociality, and pro-social activity through questionnaires.
i-STATistics ver 1.0.18 was utilized for data analysis, the independent sample t-test was used to secure the homogeneity of the pre test and compare between groups post testing, and comparison was done between groups by conducting ANCOVA to the area of diligence whose homogeneity was not secured in the pre-test. The results obtained are arranged in the following.
First, physical and emotional self conception, academic self-conception, social self-conception of the Ganggangsullae plays participant group was higher than that of the non-participant group, and these results were revealed to have a statistical significance(average self-conception t=5.25, p<0.001).
Second, the cooperation, responsibility and sociality in interpersonal relationships of the participant group appeared as more developed than the non-participant group, and these results revealed to have statistical significance(average sociality t=3.02, p<0.01). The diligence area of sociality revealed to have significant post-testing adjusted scores for each group after eliminating pre-test influences(F=19.48, p < 0.001).
Third, the pro-social activities of children with development delays in integrated classrooms, which include helping, sharing, cooperating and comforting, was revealed to have increased post testing so that it was determined that physical and emotional interaction by Ganggangsullae plays had a positive effect on pro-social behavioral change.
Aggregating these results shows that Ganggangsullae plays has a very positive effect on the self-conception and social development of elementary school students, and these are grounds that firmly prove the necessity for Ganggangsullae plays in the curriculum considering the development stage of elementary school students. Also, it was revealed that Ganggangsullae plays is a helpful activity that establishes close relationships between children with disabilities and regular children, a fact which was made known from the research results showing an increase in the pro-social activity in children with developmental delays who were passive and unable to effectively socialize in other activities.
Therefore, positively developing self-conception and sociality of children through group music and physical activities like Ganggangsullae plays during the elementary school period, which is a timely self-conception and social development period, is considered very significant.
This study is hopeful to ruminate the meaning of Ganggangsullae so that, on the basis of this positive effect, it is actually utilized as integrated song and dance in the educational field.
