Through the survey, we distributed questionnaire that consists of 21 questions on the actual condition of private early English education in the 1st and 2nd grade elementary students, and collected and analyzed them. The collected date was analyzed using SPSS program version 18.0.
The result of this research is as shown below.
First, private early English education was widespread as students who experienced private early English education in their 1st and 2nd grade of elementary school was 83.8%. Second, in the types of private early English education in the 1st and 2nd grade elementary students, private English institution/extracurricular lecture including native speaker showed the highest percentage as 28.1%. And, there was no big difference among the scopes they spent time for when they studies English, so it meant they covered all the scopes of English.
Third, in satisfaction level of private early English education, ‘very satisfied’ was ranked the highest as 42.6%, and ‘satisfied’ was the next as 32.5%. Overall, the most of them satisfied as 75% responded ‘satisfied’ with their English study.
Fourth, as a result of investigating interest in English class to the 1st and 2nd grade elementary students, the most of them were positive responses(80.4%).
According to whether they went through private early English education, it showed that the group who did private early English education has more interest than those who did not experience private early English education as 84.6% of the group who did private early English education responded positively, and 18.8% of the group who did not experience private early English education responded ‘very interested’.
Based on the above results, we suggested following things.
First, private early English education can be said to be widespread as the considerable number of the 1st and 2nd grade elementary student already went through private early English education. Systematic after-school programs should be planned and processed to absorb early English education and extracurricular private English education into the public education.
Second, as many students prefer English education with native speakers, recruitment of native instructors should be expanded. Also, systematic management of native instructors and English education curriculum and method of teaching which are suitable for our circumstances are needed.
Third, as private early English education positively effects on English education, development of teaching method and teaching materials is needed to keep this positive effect on learning English, and students can receive education appropriate for their academic level by analyzing the actual condition of private early English education
Fourth, teaching method and materials which are suitable for interest of children should be developed and provided. Children study most interestingly when they interact with their colleagues through plays and games. Programs and learning materials that utilize this psychologic characteristics of children should be developed. Teachers should keep their eyes on researching how to teach through those methods and improve their ability.
