The purpose of this study was to examine the links between dysfunctional beliefs and negative peer relationship, between each type of dysfunctional beliefs(avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, antisocial, narcissistic, histrionic, paranoid, and schizoid personality belief) and peer relationship, and the mediation effect of self-presentation behavior(excuses, justifications, disclaimers, self-handicaapping, apologies, ingratiation, intimidation, supplication, entitlement, enhancement, exemplification, basking, and blasting) on each type of dysfunctional beliefs.
The subjects in this study were 488 elementary school boys and girls in 18 different classes in S elementary school located in the city of Yangsan, Gyeongsangnamdo. The Quationnaire of this study was composed of Personality Belief Questionnaire(PBQ), a Self- Presentation Tactics Scale and a Peer Relationship Quality Inventory. For the data, correlation analysis, standardized regression analysis and multiple mediation analysis were used. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the dysfunctional belief of the students had a positive impact significantly on negative peer relationship.
Second, among the eight dysfunctional beliefs, avoidant personality belief have an influence on negative peer relationship largely, followed by antisocial personality belief, obsessive-compulsive personality belief and paranoid personality belief respectively. The rest were not significant. for the quality of the relationships, obsessive-compulsive personality belief was negatively related to, but the others positively.
Third, regarding the mediation effect of 13 self-presentational behavior on the relationship between each of the dysfunctional beliefs and negative peer relationship, via 13 self-presentational behavior subfactors, there were mediation effects significantly on : 'avoidant personality belief → blasting → negative peer relationship' / 'avoidant personality belief → intimidation → negative peer relationship' / 'obsessive-compulsive personality belief → apologies → negative peer relationship' / 'obsessive-compulsive personality belief → intimidation → negative peer relationship' / 'obsessive-compulsive personality belief → self-handicapping → negative peer relationship' / 'antisocial personality belief → apologies → negative peer relationship' / 'antisocial personality belief → apologies → negative peer relationship' and 'antisocial personality belief → intimidation → negative peer relationship'. At that time, there was negative relationships between apologies and negative peer relationship, between obsessive-compulsive personality belief and intimidation, between obsessive-compulsive personality belief and self-handicapping, and between antisocial personality belief and apologies. However, the paranoid personality belief wasn't significant in the mediation effect.
