Elderly people may enjoy cooperative and social sports to smoothly solve avoiding personal relationships, sense of isolation, and maladjustment to society which are common in the old ages. They may accept their life as meaningful through everyday sports and adapt well to surrounding environment. Moreover, they may fulfill personal desired without mental or social difficulties. Namely, they may increase energy which they had lost in the again through raising the quality of life and make amicable personal relationships through everyday sports.
This research looks into the effects of social capital (reliability, relationship network, social participation) on satisfaction of participating in everyday sports and see if the satisfaction from participating in everyday sports affects the quality of life. Furthermore, the purpose of this research is to provide basic data necessary for development of everyday sports program and policies on welfare for elderly people to attract them to actively participate in everyday sports.
The research objects are members of everyday sports in Daegu Everyday Sports Club. I distributed 400 question sheets and 380 were returned. Excluding 22 sheets with no responses and double answers, I processed 358 copies as final data. As the survey method, I used self-administrated method and interview. I used SPSS 18.0 program to process the data and conducted frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability test, correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis.
The results of analysis are as follows.
First, as demographic characteristics of survey objects, there were more female (61.2%) than male (38.8%). In terms of age, 70-75 years old (32.1%) took majority. 91.9% of them didn’t have a job. As majority number, 37.7% of them graduated elementary school as their final education.
Second, as social capital characteristics, I classified specifically as the degree of reliability, the degree of network, and the degree of social participation. I extracted factor analysis for each.
Three factors were extracted from the degree of reliability including self-reliability, reliability on others, and reliability on the policy. Self-reliability and the reliability on others are reliability on people. The lowest self-reliability was with close neighbors. The lowest reliability on others was with government organizations and public officials. The highest reliability for spouses was with both self-reliability and reliability on others. In the degree of network, one factor was extracted related to exchange and community residents’ event had the highest point. In the social participation, also one factor was extracted and the information on project by everyday sports club showed the highest point.
There were three factors in satisfaction on participating in everyday sports. The factors of physical satisfaction included physical ability, confidence, physical energy, mental stability, pride, and promoting physical strength. Factors of social satisfaction included feeling of intimacy, understanding, social exchange, and keeping relationships. Factors of mental satisfaction included health, relieving stress, and inducing interests.
As the result of factor analysis on quality of life, there were two factors. The first factor was quality of life and hopeful, lucky, fulfilling, friendly, and worthwhile were extracted factors. The second factor was satisfaction for life and pleasant, fun, and valuable were extracted factors.
Third, in the differences according to demographic characteristics, social capital with sex had significant difference with the level of p<.05 in male and female at self-reliability. There were no significant differences in reliability on others, reliability on the policy, social network, and social participation. Social capital with age showed significant difference with the level of p<.05 in the reliability on others and social network. In the reliability on others, after the post hoc test, 76 years old or older had higher reliability on others than 60-65 or 66-70 years old. In the social network, after the post hoc test, 71-75 years old had higher points than 76 years old or older. There was no significant difference in whether or not having a job or the degree of education background.
Fourth, in the differences with social capital for satisfaction on participating in everyday sports and quality of life, social capital had significant effects with the level of p<.001 of social participation in everyday sports satisfaction rate (physical satisfaction.) In the satisfaction rate (social satisfaction) of everyday sports of social capital, social participation had significant effects with the level of p<.001 and there were significant effects in reliability on others with p<.01 and social network with p<.05. In the satisfaction rate of everyday sports (emotional satisfaction) affected by social capital, there was significant effect in social participation with the level of p<.001, and there were significant effects in reliability on others, self-reliability and social network with the level of p<.01. Reliability on policy was not significant in social capital (reliability, network, and social participation.)
Fifth, there were significant effects of social capital on quality of life A (emotional satisfaction) with social network and social participation as the level of p<.001. The reliability on policy had significant effect with the level of p<.05. In the effects of social capital on quality of life B (physical and social satisfaction), reliability on others, social network, and social participation had significant effects with the level of p<.001. In the effects of social capital on quality of life 2 (subjective satisfaction on life), social participation had significant effect with the level of p<.001, and reliability on policy had significant effect with the level of p<.05.
Sixth, in the relationship between satisfaction on participating in everyday sports and quality of life, satisfaction on participating in everyday sports had significant effects on quality of life A (emotional satisfaction) with physical satisfaction and social satisfaction with the level of p<.001. In the effects of satisfaction on participating in everyday sports on quality of life B (physical and social satisfaction), social satisfaction and emotional satisfaction had significant effects with the level of p<.001. In the effects of satisfaction of participating in everyday sports on quality of life 2 (subjective satisfaction of life), physical satisfaction and social satisfaction had significant effects with the level of p<.001.
Seventh, in the social capital, social participation had more effects on satisfaction on participation in everyday sports (physical satisfaction, social satisfaction, and emotional satisfaction) than other factors.
