This study objective is to see a general pattern of their parent attachment, Ego-Resilience and adaptation to school life for children in higher grades of primary school. Then, to analysis a difference caused by gender and grades. In addition to this, assuming that Ego-Resilience mediates parent attachment and adaptation to school life, based on the previous researches, I aimed to explore the relationship, an influence and mediating effect as well.
For this study objective, 338 children from 5 and 6 grade of primary schools located in Buk-Gu, Kwangsan-Gu and Nam-Gu in Kwangju city were eventually collected. To inspect general tendency of study subjects, I obtained frequency analysis results and percentage, also Cronbach’s α coefficient to test a significance of research tool. To inspect general tendency of parent attachment, Ego-Resilience and adaptation to school life, I compared mean and standard deviation between groups and also did t-test to see a difference in main factors affected by gender and grade. In addition to this, I checked Pearson’s correlation coefficients, then I did Standard Multiple Regression Analysis and Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis in order to see Ego-Resilience has a role of mediating in parent attachment and α adaptation to school life.
To sum up, the results from this research is as below.
First, as a result of examination on the general pattern of parent attachment, both of father attachment group and mother attachment group were overall higher level than medium level. Also, mean of mother attachment group was higher than mean of father attachment group. With respect to a general tendency of Ego-Resilience, the level was overall higher than medium level . The most strongly influencing independent variables to the dependant variables were in the order of curiosity, vitality, interpersonal relations, optimistic and emotion control, that is, curiosity was the highest and emotion control was the lowest. In respect of a general tendency of adaptation to school life, the level was overall higher than medium level. The most strongly affecting variables to the dependent variable were relationship with classmates, relationship with teachers, attitude in the class, school rules in order, that is, relationship with classmates was the highest and school rules was the lowest.
Second, Unlike father attachment, mother attachment was statistically significantly different by gender, specially in a total scores of mother attachment and a alienation which is one of the sub factors. Thus it showed that girls were aware more attachment to mother and feel alienation less than boys do. As to the father attachment by grade, Although there was no statistically significant difference in total scores of father attachment, a alienation , one of the sub factors, shows a significant difference and specially children in 6 grade feel alienation more than children in 5 grade. As to the mother attachment, there was
statistically significant difference in total scores of mother attachment and in the communication and alienation out of sub factors as well. Thus it turns out that overall, children in 5 grade highly acknowledge attachment to mother compared to children in 6 grade and also has mother-child facilitative communication and feel alienation less.
Third, with respect to Ego-Resilience by gender and grade, there was no statistically significant difference. However, there was a difference by gender out of sub factors in that girls have a higher ability to get positive interest from others compared to boys.
Forth, In respect to adaptation to school life by gender, it shows statistically significant difference in that girls are good at being adapted to adaptation to school life. As to each sub factors, there was significant difference in relationship with teachers, relationship with classmates, school rules but attitude in the class. For the adaptation to school life by grade, there was significant difference and children in 5 grade were better at adaptation to school life than children in 6 grade. There was difference in relationship with teachers, attitude in the class, school rules but relationship with classmates out of sub factors.
Fifth, The result of the inspection on the mediating effect of Ego-Resilience with regard to the relationship between father attachment and adaptation to school life is as below. Ego-Resilience between father attachment and total scores of adaptation to school life had meditating effect and relationship between father attachment and sub factors of adaptation to school life such as relationship with teachers, relationship with classmates, attitude in the class, school rules also showed partial mediating effect of Ego-Resilience. That is, father attachment has not only direct influence on adaptation to school life and each sub factors but also has indirect influence on them through Ego-Resilience.
Sixth, with respect to the relationship between mother attachment and adaptation to school life in terms of mediating effect, it turns out that it has partial mediating effect. The relationship of mother attachment with sub factors of adaptation to school life such as relationship with teachers, relationship with classmates, attitude in the class and school rules also shows partial mediating effect. that is, I was able to see that mother attachment affects to not only adaptation to school life and its sub factors but also indirectly to a mediating factor, Ego-Resilience. From this, It was confirmed that Ego-Resilience made a role to mediate between the parent attachment and the adaptation to school life as a critical personal resource for the adaptation to school life.
This research is meaningful in that it made it possible to deeply understand the relationship between parent attachment and adaptation to school life through the way that first,
reveals the influence of parent attachment and Ego-Resilience on adaptation to school life and second, reveals the fact that a Ego-Resilience , the children’s personal character, works as a mediator between parent attachment and adaptation to school life. In addition to this, I confirmed importance of Ego-Resilience improvement, a personal character.
Overall, I would like to regard it meaningful to provide preliminary data that helps children having troubles to get adapted to the school life and also to develop programs that improve the Ego-Resilience which helps stable adaptation to school life, being a protective factor in stressful situation.
