The objective of this study is to clarify moderating effect of soothing ability and self-efficacy which are protective factors for burnout effect and risk of occupational stress. Correlation analysis, enter multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were used to verify the hypothesis that (1) risk factors of occupational stress have an effect on burnout and (2) self-efficay and soothing ability have moderating effect on predicting burnout from occupational stress. A random sample of middle school eachers and high school teachers nationwide were asked to complete burnout questionnaire, occupational stress risk factor test, self-efficacy test, and soothing ability test. The result is as below.
First, risk factors in occupational stress showed positive correlation with burnout and self-efficacy and soothing ability which are mediators negative.
Second, risk factors in occupational stress had a significant effect on sub-dimensions(ex. lack of challenge, role conflict). But, role ambiguity and work overload did not significantly predict burnout.
Third, in predicting burnout from role ambiguity, self-efficacy and soothing ability functioned as moderators. Meanwhile, lack of challenge, role conflict, and work overload didn't function as moderators.
Overall, the importance of this study is in that it is appropriate to propose risk factors in occupational stress as independent variables and in confirming self-efficacy and soothing ability risk factors in occupational stress as protective factors of burnout from role ambiguity. Therefore, to protect an individual from a bournout caused by role ambiguity, a program to elevate self-efficacy and soothing ability is needed. If, at the same time, studies finding moderators for lack of challenge, role conflict, and work overload are followed, it will be a valuable information on preventing burnouts of school teachers.
