This study was conducted to investigate on whether the Smartphone Addiction Proneness scale developed by National Information Society Agency(2011) is valid to use among high school students, and then to investigate the relationship between smartphone addition and self-esteem, impulsiveness, and sociability. The data were collected from 650 high school students in Go-yang, Gyoung-gi Province by investigating general status related to using smartphones and completing smartphone addiction tests, self-esteem tests, impulsiveness tests, and sociability tests to evaluate the validity of smartphone addiction proneness scale. 514 copies of the data were used in this study.
The summary of the study is as follows: First, smartphone addiction proneness scale turned out to be valid in distinguishing addicted students from a sample of high school students. Second, difference in level of self-esteem between two groups were not significant as the participants in both groups used phone service more than the internet. Third, the addiction group had higher level of impulsiveness than the non-addict group. Fourth, the addiction group showed lower level of sociability.
The importance of this study lies in that smartphone addiction proneness scale can be an adequate tool for identifying smartphone addicts among adolescents. Furthermore, it lies in that when guiding smartphone addicted students, this scale helps to verify high level of impulsiveness or low level of sociability. Thus, this scale would contribute to the improvement of impulse control ability and sociability through proper guidance and counselling in aforementioned manner.
