    This study is on Yunggi pattern potteries in the initial Neolithic Age in the Korean peninsula (B.C.6,000~4,500). This study analyzed Yunggi pattern potteries, one of the oldest patterns in the Korean peninsula with an assumption that there must be clear exclusiveness and affinity in the same cultural area in the society with no unified social norm. Pattern is not a simple sign, but a ‘language’ of a group that indicates correlation between groups. Accordingly, the view of time and space was figured out by analyzing Yunggi pattern potteries in terms of patterns.
    Firstly, to figure out time of Yunggi pattern potteries, the pattern attributes were extracted amount 2,150 patterns by pattern factor, pattern shape and pattern zone. Such was set by pattern structure and pattern group according to the combination of pattern attributes. The set category and type was set as specific category and specific type (pattern variation) according to the manufacturing methods including engraving method of Yunggi pattern and consecution of horizontal pattern. The verification of time over such types was made by layer examination, AMS aging review obtained by carbide on a pottery. In particular, such chronology measurement was to give the nature of time to pattern occurrence order and duration period by classifying the long type and short type pattern. Thus, it seems more effective in explaining recently excavated resources compared with the existing stage-based chronology method.
    The specific type (pattern variation) was set to 7 groups according to the occurrence order. It could set 5 stages according to the apparent pattern change point. The details of set stages are as follows.
    The stage Ⅰ is the creating period of Yunggi pattern which covers B.C.6,000 ~5,500. The stage Ⅱ is the expanding period of Yunggi pattern which covers B.C.5,500~5,100. The stage Ⅲ is the developing period of Yunggi pattern which covers B.C.5,100~4,800. The stage Ⅳ is the period of spreading geometric Yunggi pattern which covers B.C.4,800~4,500. The stage Ⅴ is the early stage of the Neolithic Age in the Korean peninsula at a time the significance of Yunggi pattern almost disappeared and it moves to the earlier stage which covers after B.C.4,500.
    The exclusiveness and affinity by specifying type is confirmed. There are 4 cultural areas within Yunggi pattern potteries areas including East coastal central zone, East coastal south zone, Southeast coastal zone, and South coastal zone. The progress of each zone was figured out according to the stage.
    In the initial period of the Neolithic Age in the Korean peninsula, Yunggi pattern potteries culture showed clear exclusiveness and affinity by groups through the study of category and type. And this study could figure out the unique relics and group such as Busan Dongsamdong relics and Ulsan Sejuk relics, but it also showed that there was no clear difference of pattern by groups. Accordingly, when it comes to apply to Yunggi pattern potteries groups in the Korean peninsula, this study demonstrates that the same thinking pattern and technical direction along with the exchange between group even though there was no unified social norm.
