The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among gratitude dispositions, cognitive emotion regulation strategies, and secondary anger-thoughts(Derogation of others/revenge, Helplessnes) and to verify the mediating effects of the cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the relation between the gratitude dispositions and the secondary anger-thoughts.
For study, the sample of 333 university students(136 men and 197 women) were asked to complete the K-GQ-6, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaires, and the Secondary Anger-Thought Scale.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
Firstly, the gratitude dispositions had a negative correlation with the secondary anger-thoughts and the maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, but positive correlation with the adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.
In the correlation between the cognitive emotion regulation strategies and the secondary anger-thoughts, the secondary anger-thoughts had a positive correlation with the maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and negative correlation with the adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.
Secondly, a multiple regression was conducted to examine the mediating effects of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the relation between the gratitude dispositions and the secondary anger-thoughts. The result indicated that both adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies had a statistically significant partial mediation effect.
Thirdly, a multiple regression was conducted to examine the mediating effects of the subscales of the cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the relation between the gratitude dispositions and the secondary anger-thoughts. The result indicated that Positive reappraisal, Putting into perspective, Other blame and Catastrophizing strategies had a statistically significant partial mediation effect.
The results of this study are important in revealing the effects of the gratitude dispositions and the cognitive emotion regulation strategies to the secondary anger-thoughts.
Finally, implications and limitations of the current study and the suggestions for future research were discussed.
