The purpose of this study is to find out why descriptions on roads are different in two geographical books, 『Dorogo』 and 「Yeojigo」 and how the ideas are reflected in old maps. To achieve this, the road systems of Daero(main roads) and Sayeonro(four peripheral roads) in 『Dorogo』 and 「Yeojigo」 written by Shin Kyung-Jun are compared and analyzed. The way the road systems are presented in one of the maps, 『Dongyeokdo』 is also studied.
In his book, 『Dorogo』, Shin Kyung-Jun gathered the information on all kinds of roads and organized it systematically. In volume one, Six Daero and Bangtongjiro are referred to as Gyeong(經) and Wi(緯) respectively and in volume three, Sayeonro is referred to as Juwi(周圍). All the national road systems are explained in order of Gyeong(經), Wi(緯) and Juwi(周圍). Road hierarchy is described in order of Six Daero, Sayeonro and sea routes. The description starts from the center of Korean territory and moves onto the outskirts. Separate roads are shown organically and comprehensively in the framework of Sayeon in 『Dorogo』.
Six Daero(six main roads) in 『Dorogo』 divides the whole country into six sections in the form of ‘’, and includes stores(鋪店) and periodical markets, which reveals the writer's practical ideas on commercial development. On the other hand, 「Yeojigo」, a geographical book published by the government, describes Nine Daero, adding Daero to military headquarters like Tongyeong and Chungcheongsuyoung to the existing Six Daero. Nine Daero system of 「Yeojigo」 is based on Six Daero of 『Dorogo』 and it is designed for administrative and military purposes. Especially, the privately published book, 『Dorogo』 uses a lot of transportation names when deciding on place names on Daero. The book well reflects socio-economic changes like commercial development, which 「Yeojigo」, the government sponsored book, doesn't explain.
Sayeonro(four peripheral roads) in 『Dorogo』 marks the national territory and shows road networks connecting four edges. Sayeon is divided into Samhaeyeon and Yanggangyeon. Samyeon in Samhaeyeon means the East Sea, the West Sea and the South Sea of Korea. Yanggangyeon, starting from Mt. Baekdu and connecting the Amnok river and the Dooman River, is located in the north. Especially, Mt. Baekdu is given a symbolic meaning as a starting point of Sayeonro, which shows the mountain is our territory. 'Amnokgangyeonro', and 'Dumangangyeonro' are considered as front lines in the border. This concept on northern area is copied on grid-system maps such as 『Cheonggudo』, 『Dongyeodo』 and 『Daedongyeojido』. Mt. Baekdu, the Amnok river and the Dooman River are all connected on all those maps made after Shin Kyung-Jun.
Among maps influenced by the Shin Kyung-Jun's geographical books is 『Dongyeokdo』. The map tends to use the same place names, courses and distances as they are described on Nine Daero in 「Yeojigo」. Especially, in cases of the road between Buryeong and Hoeryeong in the 2nd Gyeongheungro and the road between Yugok and Nakdong in the 4th Dongraero, the record of the books, 『Dorogo』 and 「Yeojigo」 consists with the description of the map, 『Dongyeokdo』. Therefore, because 『Dongyeokdo』 was made after Shin Kyung-Jun and describes Daero in the same way as 「Yeojigo」 does, it is estimated that the map was made by Shin Kyung-Jun or the people who made 「Yeojigo」 or it was drawn by their followers.
