The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects of leisure on quality and success of elderly’s life, and to improve their leisure and society culture of the aged.
Accordingly, the basis of analysis of this thesis cross-referenced preceding research regarding the life of leisure of the aging and the aged and this thesis reconsiders the current state of leisure and the desire for leisure of the elderly. This thesis reveals issues in current work to implement a culture of leisure and activities which must be improved upon in order for the aged to have a better sense of life satisfaction, mental health, and quality of lifestyle.
One-hundred-thirty senior citizens over the age of sixty of Gunsan City who frequent Gunsan Senior Citizens Welfare Center were chosen as the subjects of this study. The research tool of this study is a questionnaire which factored the average character of the senior citizens, the current state of their life of leisure, the frequency of their usage of facilities and places, the frequency of their participation at such facilities, and their satisfaction and attitude.
The analytical results of this thesis are similar to the results found in previous research, particularly in cases which compare “Economic Hardship,” and “Loneliness.” However, the results of this thesis differ from previous research because it includes a changing dynamic of today’s society: the increasing rate of highly educated senior citizens.
As the number of highly educated senior citizens increase, the number of senior citizens utilizing their leisure time on Internet Technology (IT) is also growing. However, the results of this thesis show that there is exclusive insufficiency of smooth communication between the young generation and the elderly leading the aged to feel deprivation in matters regarding IT.
Additionally, the usage of cultural life centers, recreation centers, sightseeing facilities, and the desire for various leisure activities among senior citizens are increasing but because of economic hardship, the number of elderly who are only able to use sports facilities or assisted-living facilities is high. Finally, the results show that the present conditions are such that many senior citizens use their leisure time either watching television or playing Korean chess or the game of gowithpeers.
The hypothesis that a high number of senior citizens take part in the leisure programs and activities of religious affiliations was found false in this study. This study shows that only a small number of senior citizens who are either in poor health conditions or preparing for death participate in leisure programs provided through religious affiliations.
The limit of this study is that it focuses on one particular group using and participating in leisure activities of one welfare center of a small town. Therefore, because the results of this study are case specific, this study cannot form an all applicable theory or generalization. Thus, there is a need for further widespread examination of the current conditions of leisure and the satisfaction gained from leisure activities.
There is need for further research and examination because this study could not use the Korean region as a whole unit as the sample size. A particular group of various senior citizens who use and participate in leisure programs of one welfare center was consulted. Furthermore, there are factors which this study could not further examine regarding all the likes and dislikes of the elderly. To have more accuracy and precise results of the desire of senior citizens and their level of satisfaction gained from leisure, survey questionnaire contents, facts, and materials must have more details and the senior citizens of the country as a whole must be survey participants.
