The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of visual literacy activities on the ability of visual literacy and mathematical problem solving.
To meet the above purpose, three study purposes have been set up as follows:
1. What are elementary school teachers' awareness and needs about the visual literacy activities?
2. What are the types of visual images in elementary school mathematics textbook?
3. What are the effects of visual literacy activities on lower grade of elementary students?
To design the visual literacy activities, the inquiry was conducted to examin A thesis submitted to the Council of the Graduate School of Kyungpook National University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for degree of Ph. D. in June 2012
e the elementary school teachers' awareness and needs about the visual literacy activities and the analysis was conducted to find out the types of visual images in elementary school mathematics textbook. According to the results of inquiry and analysis, the visual literacy activities was designed.
The subjects of this study were 72 elementary students of two classes in the first grade in Daegu. 36 students were assigned to the experimental group and the others to the control group. The experimental group was involved in the visual literacy activities by the researcher 16 times, twice a week, during 8 weeks. To assess the visual literacy, mathematical problem solving ability, and the level of utilizing visual literacy, K-TVPS-R, An Assessment of Visual Learning, Test of Artistic Expression Development, and Test of mathematics problem solving ability were used. The data were analyzed by using MANCOVA and ANCOVA. Sequential QUAN-QUAL analysis was taken advantage of to find out the changes and differences in the process of mathematical problem solving based on the level of visual literacy.
The result showed as follows:
First, the visual literacy activities had a meaningful effect on visual literacy of lower grade elementary students.
Second, the visual literacy activities influenced meaningfully on mathematical problem solving ability of lower grade elementary students.
Third, the visual literacy activities had a meaningful impact on the level of utilizing visual literacy.
Finally, making use of visual literacy in the process of mathematical problem solving depending on the level of visual literacy was showed differently. While the group of higher level of visual literacy solved the mathematical problems successfully by using a wide variety of visual literacy, the group of lower level of visual literacy failed to work out the mathematical problems successfully and did not make good use of visual literacy.
In conclusion, the visual literacy activities showed that it had a crucial effect on visual literacy, mathematical problem solving ability and the level of utilizing visual literacy. Also, it was proven that the higher visual literacy level was, the better mathematical problem solving was.
