The purposes of this study were to develop teaching method for the cause of wind and to identify its effects on understanding scientific conception. To fulfill the purpose of this study, teaching method was designed to make students recognize that the temperature changes could be varied according to the object's properties by measuring various object's temperature and then learn the cause of wind through the experiment using convection box.
In order to examine the effects of this teaching method, the study selected 152 persons of 6th grade in elementary students. Before the instruction, a conceptual test was conducted to investigate students' preconceptions. Then, to understand the process of students's conceptual change, post-test and interview were conducted after the instruction. It was conducted a questionnaire and interview to investigate student's perception on this teaching method. The results obtained through this process were as below.
First, they showed low understanding of scientific concept about the cause of wind. Most students had non-response about pre-test and some students who had temperature conception couldn't also explain properly. It indicated that many elementary school students had no idea about the concept of temperature and the cause of wind.
Second, teaching method using the glass convection box is effective to understand scientific conception about the cause of wind. Contrary to wood convection box, students could observe air flow easily when they experimented with glass convection box. Besides, the temperature condition of glass convection box was similar to that of natural state.
Third, measuring various object's temperature linked with convection box experiment was useful to improve student's understanding the cause of wind. The result of measuring the temperature were allowed students to apply their knowledge in real world situations and help to understand the reason of land and sea breeze when they did experiment with glass convection box.
Fourth, student's satisfaction level about this teaching method were very high. Especially, they were satisfied with experiment using glass convection box. And student reacted positively to experiment measuring the temperature in that they could choose the object freely.
In conclusion, the teaching method measuring the temperature of the ground and surface of the water glass convection box induced positive changes to improve understanding scientific conception cause about of wind.
