This study aims to provide base data helpful to set the direction for quality development of Christian children care centers established with the purpose of Christian education by comparisons of recognitions and requirements between Christian and non-Christian mothers regarding the children care centers’ Christian education courses after indentifying considered standards of the mothers of children in early childhood in selection of children care center. The research issues according the study’s purpose are as under:
1. What kinds of differences in selection factors of mothers of children in early childhood are in Christian and non-Christians of church affiliated and general children care centers?
2. What kinds of differences in recognitions of Christian education of children in early childhood of mothers of children in early childhood are in Christian and non-Christians of church affiliated and general children care centers?
3. What kinds of differences in requirements for Christian education of children in early childhood of mothers of children in early childhood are in Christian and non-Christians of church affiliated and general children care centers?
The subjects for this study are Christian and non-Christian mothers sending their children in early childhood to children care centers. Total 250 copies of questionnaire were distributed to general private and church affiliated children care centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do and the 162 copies were recollected.
This study uses a research method through questionnaires. And, for the research tools, after the questionnaires fitting to the research purpose from the previous studies of Mun, Sun-ae (2010), Song, Yun-jeong (2007) and Ma, Hyeon-a (2007) are excerpted and the areas and he questions are composed, revision and supplement are applied through discussions with experts in Christian education for young children.
The data collected for this study is analyzed by using SPSS WIN 18.0 statics program. As the analysis technique, the frequency and the percentage are calculated to find out general backgrounds of the mothers. Independent t-test to find differences between Christians and non-Christians, One-way ANOVA and Scheffe Post Hoc tests to find differences according to types between Christians and non-Christians are performed along with frequency analysis to check obstacle factors.
The summary of this study’ result is as under: First, the mothers of children in early childhood show to evely consider all factors of educational courses, administrational and financial operation, personal environment and physical environment. Especially, they think teachers’ qualities, teaching capabilities, directors’ qualifications, pleasant interior environment and quality and amount of provided meals. Regarding Christian factors, including Christian educational program availability (church affiliated children centers Christian mothers M=4.11, general private children care centers Christian mothers M=3.64), director’s Christian education philosophy (church affiliated children centers Christian mothers M=4.21, general private children care centers Christian mothers M=3.00) or teachers’ Christianity, the consideration level of Christian mothers is higher (church affiliated children centers Christian mothers M=4.00, general private children care centers Christian mothers M=3.64), while the consideration level of Christian mothers in church affiliated children centers is higher than Christian mothers in general private children care centers. In the meanwhile, for non-Christian mothers, physical factors including various extra activities (church affiliated children centers non-Christian mothers M=4.17, general private children care centers non-Christian mothers M=4.24), valuation certification availability (church affiliated children centers non-Christian mothers M=4.38, general private children care centers non-Christian mothers M=4.29), scales of the centers (church affiliated children centers non-Christian mothers M=4.04, general private children care centers non-Christian mothers M=4.23), distances from home (church affiliated children centers non-Christian mothers M=4.25, general private children care centers non-Christian mothers M=4.41), and pleasant interior environment (church affiliated children centers non-Christian mothers M=4.71, general private children care centers non-Christian mothers M=4.85) are shown to be more importantly considered.
Second, the recognitions of mothers of children in early childhood show to be different depending on integration level of Christian factors to the educational courses. The recognition of necessity for educational contents including Christian factors by containing the word “God’, mentions on ‘God’s creation’, or others, shows high in Christian mothers while the recognition is low in non-Christian mothers. In the meanwhile, the content without showing information regarding God shows to have high recognition for the necessity regardless to the mothers’ religions. No significant difference shows between the groups regardless to Christian content in the basic life area and the physical exercise area. The reason for this is interpreted caused by high interests of others in health. In the social relationship area, the content regarding the relationship with neighbors doesn’t show any significant difference between the groups. However, the contents on the relationship with God and the identity as God’s children show significant difference between Christian and non-Christian mothers (p<.001). The communication area does not show a significant difference for the general contents. However, the content regarding the communication with God shows significant difference between Christian and non-Christian mothers (p<.001).
