자화상을 통한 내면의 연구 : 연구자의 작품을 중심으로 = A Study of an Inner World through Self-portrait

There must be a purpose for us to be born as there are numerous reasons for existence for every being. To find my life purpose, I chose self-portrait as a tool to find out and express who I am. Self-portraiture is an art genre that reflects and illustrates the times and at the same time, its an appropriate genre to examine how ones identity is expressed in a certain logical formation. A Self-portrait shows an artists true self upon which the artists every opinion is reflected since it develops along with the artists growth and influences the ideas and images of his work.
The expressions of the inner self that I try to convey in my self-portraits are examined in this study. In addition, it studies the fundamental significance of self-portraits and how both the self and inner life have been illustrated in self-portraiture. In accordance with the purpose, it analyzes and explores the background, progress, as well as the traits of expressive techniques and methods of my work.
I produced self-portraits from 2006 to 2008 and I was the theme, as well as my subject matter, in my work. It started from identifying who I was and rather reflected my perspectives that both confirmed and revealed the true identity of my inner self rather than simply depicting the outer image of me. To recognize my inner self and to deliver characteristic, authentic self-portraits that portray self-consciousness, I wanted to create a formatively exquisite image by using new medium, photographs, repetition and other visually experiencing techniques.
This study consists of three chapters. The first chapter reviews both the origin and history of self-portraits and has examples of works of classical meaning, including masterpieces of portraits and self-portraits and then examines the meaning of self-portraiture. It also estimates both the value and meaning of the self-portrait in contemporary art and compares selective artists works. Chapter 2 defines the concept of 　self　 in a theoretical aspect and interprets what kind of inner world other artists express through the form of self-portrait. To link it to my work, Chapter 3 elucidates how the inner world is portrayed in my work, based on the background and progress of work. It analyzes the distinctive nature of the medium in formation and expression techniques. It further demonstrates how I describe my inner side in self-portraits through examples and analysis.
The purpose of my work is to find myself in the ceaselessly changing flow of society, invent my own language as I change accordingly with the times and to grow by communicating and sharing with others through the progress of my journey. I will continuously build and develop my own esthetic foundation with efforts to define my identity and to pursue an inquiry into inner world through an analysis of my work.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

모든 것에는 존재의 이유가 있다. 우리의 삶 역시 마찬가지다. 연구자는 이러한 삶의 존재 이유를 찾고 알아가기 위한 방법으로 ‘자화상(自畵像)을 통한 내면의 연구’를 논문의 주제로 선택하였다. 자화상은 시대적 초상의 단면이며, 자아의 정체성이 어떠한 형식 원리를 가지고 표현되었는지 알아보기 위한 적절한 회화 장르이다. 또한 자화상은 화가가 성장함과 동시에 작품의 사상과 형상 자체에도 영향을 끼치며 발전하기 때문에 화가의 모든 의사가 반영된 화가 자신의 모습이라고 할 수 있다.
본 연구는 연구자의 자화상 작품을 중심으로 논의되었으며 연구자가 표현하고자 하는 자아의 내면 표출을 이해함에 큰 의의가 있다. 그리고 미술 표현에서 자화상이라는 장르의 근원적인 의미와 화가의 자아와 내면성이 그동안 미술에서 어떠한 양상으로 표현되었는가를 탐구한다. 이에 따라 연구자의 작품 형성 배경과 과정, 내외적인 표현의 특성과 방법을 분석하고 연구하였다.
연구자는 2006년부터 2008년 동안 일련의 자화상 작업을 해 왔으며 연구자 자신이 주제이자 소재였다. 본 연구에서 다루어질 연구자의 자화상 시리즈는 내가 누구인가에 대한 자아의 정체성 확인에서부터 시작되었으며 단순히 연구자의 외형만을 사실적으로 형상화하여 표현하는 것이 아니라 연구자의 내면 속 자아의 확인은 물론 정체성의 표출로 드러나는 연구자의 시각이 투영되었다. 그리고 연구자는 자아를 인식하고 자의식을 담은 자화상을 개성 있고 확실하게 표현하기위해 새로운 매체와 사진, 반복적인 행위와 시각적 체험의 표현방법을 사용하여 조형적으로 특색 있게 표현하고자 하였다.
본 연구는 전체 3개의 장으로 이루어져 있다. 제 1장에서는 자화상의 기원과 역사에 대해 고찰하고 자화상과 초상화의 대가들의 작품을 예로 들어 고전적 의미의 자화상을 살펴본 후 자화상의 의미를 알아보았다. 그리고 현대미술에서 보여 지는 자화상들의 가치와 의의를 알아보고 몇몇 작가들을 예로 들어 그들의 작품을 비교 연구하였다. 제 2 장에서는 이론적 측면에서 자아의 개념을 알아보고 자아의 정체성에 대해 연구하며 자화상 형식을 통해 자신의 내면을 표현했던 작가들의 작품을 예로 들어 자화상을 통해 내면을 전달하려는 의미가 무엇인지 알아보았다. 제 3장에서는 연구자의 작품 형성에 관한 배경과 더불어 이를 바탕으로 연구자의 작품에 있어서 내면 표현이 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 연구하였다. 그리고 연구자의 작품형식의 매체적 특성과 표현 방법에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 연구자의 작품을 제시하고 분석함으로써 연구자가 자화상 작업에서 어떻게 내면을 표현하는지 알아보았다.
연구자의 작업은 단순히 자화상이란 하나의 표현 방법으로 자신을 드러내는 것이 아니라 끊임없이 변화하는 사회의 흐름 속에서 자아를 찾고 시대와 함께 변화되어 가는 연구자만의 표현 언어를 만들어 가면서 자기를 알아가고, 그 과정을 작품으로 풀어 사람들과 소통하고 교감하며 성장하는 것에 목적이 있다. 이와 같은 연구를 통하여 연구자는 자아에 대한 정체성을 찾고 내면에 대한 진지한 고찰을 시도하여 작업을 더욱 연구하고 발전시켜 연구자만의 예술론을 확립하는데 밑거름을 다질 것이다.
