'Afterschool program' has been established since 2006 in Korea to
develop students' aptitude and talent using a variety of creative
educational programs in school education.
'Afterschool program' is a governmental policy that aimed to narrow
the gap of educational opportunities after regular school classes.
The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of and
problems in afterschool English programs by surveying students'
satisfaction with these programs. I developed questionnaires, analyzed
the causes of problems identified through a questionnaire survey at C
Middle School in Seoul. And then I proposed solutions for the problems,
and made plans to activate school after school. The results are
summarized as follows.
First, according to the first research question, the rate of participation
of after school English classes was low and the first reason why
students did not participate was to attend private language schools.
Also, they thought there were not any classes that they wanted to join.
Many students recognized that the class content should be improved.
Specially, they regarded the content of the class and an interesting
curriculum as important factors. In order to increase students'
participation, efforts should be made first to induce the non-participant
group (71.8%) to participate in afterschool English class. And also, the
contents of the afterschool programs should be diversified and
departmentalized. Especially, it is important to set up various kinds of
classes for developing student's aptitude and potential ability.
As long-term measures, accordingly, first, we should enhance
the quality of English class by developing excellent English
programs. Second, teachers teaching in afterschool English
should be provide with incentives like reduced workroad. In
addition, educational authority needs to launch an after school
support center or a team in charge of after school.
