Korea faces a rapid increase in the number and rate of ageing population with lowered birth rate and life extension due to improvement of living conditions and development of medical technologies by economic growth since 1960. According to indicators of National Statistical Office, population aged above 65 among the total population in Korea was 11.0% which meant 1 in 10 Korean was senior citizen aged above 65, therefore it is predicted that Korea will soon become an aged society.
Korean population is aging incomparably faster than any other countries in the world at present. It took 24 years for Japan, a neighboring country and the representative country in longevity, to become an aged society however, Korea is expected to become an aged society in the shortest period in the world, 18 years.
Such rapid arrival of aged society has resulted serious social problems such as health, psychosocial isolation and loneliness, poverty, supporting senior citizens and so on and it is considered that Korea’s first assignment for now is to solve such problems and prepare plans.
Advanced countries where have already experienced an aged society seeking a way to solve the problem of the aged from lifelong education. It is because education plays an important role to have the aged to be in the center of changes as an important social formation rather than second-class citizen and to lead an aged society to be healthier and more productive. Moreover, with the arrival of a ‘society based on knowledge’, ‘knowledge and information’ have become nation’s competitiveness and worked as the driving force of ego development of individuals so interests in lifelong education of the aged are increased along with the importance of such study. And lifelong educational institutions and programs targeting the aged are also increasing for the last few years as if it reflected such interests. Nevertheless, the actual rate of the aged participating in lifelong education is still very low compared to increasing educational institutions and programs.
Statistics of lifelong education showed the reality that there were only 1.3% elderly learners among other learners participating in lifelong educational institutions. Therefore it is required to guide the aged who has yet participated in lifelong education to the scene of lifelong education in order to solve the problems of the aged in an aged society and to realize a society of lifelong education.
Therefore, this study intended to investigate a motivation to participate in lifelong education targeting the aged who already participated in lifelong education in relevant institutions in order to inquire the factors affecting their motivations to participation and to expiscate a difference in such motivations according to individual background features and whether the nature of lifelong educational institutions affects the motivations so as to promote senior citizen’s participation in lifelong education henceforth and to suggest a plan to invigorate such activity.
To accomplish such goal, surveys were performed targeting the elderly learners aged above full 60 who are currently participated in lifelong education in 4 institutions; attached organization of school, affiliated organization of establishment and lifelong educational institution of civil society organization among lifelong educational institutions for the aged in Daegu and such questionnaires were statistically treated with SPSS 17.0 program.
The results of the research from an investigation performed in this study were as follows.
For <Research Hypothesis1>, there was a difference found in motivations to participate in lifelong education in accordance with gender, age, academic ability, marital status and whether to live with family except for a difference in motivations by average monthly income among associate variables for individual background features of the elderly learners. In case of gender, there was a difference showed in the goal-orie nted motivation and the education-oriented motivation and females showed a higher level of motivation for participation by subordinate type of each motivation. Age difference was only appeared in the activity-oriented motivation and academic ability showed a difference between groups having an academic ability below middle school graduation, below high school graduation and above university graduation for the goal-oriented motivation.
Motivation by marital status showed a significant difference on the goal-oriented motivation and a group without spouses showed a higher level in motivation to participate in lifelong education. And it showed a notable difference between the goal-oriented motivation and the education-oriented motivation by whether to live with family.
In <Research Hypothesis2>, the effects of educational environment and instructional design of lifelong educational institutions on elderly learner’s motivations to participate in lifelong education were verified and the results showed that the only activity-oriented motivation was statistically significantly affected by educational environment and it was analyzed that instructional design gave notable effects on every subordinate type of motivation.
The results derived on the basis of above were as follows.
Firstly, looking into a difference in motivations according to individual background features of elderly learners showed that a difference appeared in a level of participation by subordinate variables such as ‘gender’, ‘age’, ‘academic ability’, ‘marital status’ and ‘cohabiting family’ through an empirical analysis.
Therefore, it was required to examine each elderly learner’s individual background features and to stimulate their motivations for participating in lifelong education by designing programs for lifelong education for the aged considered their genders, ages, academic abilities and so on in order to raise their participations.
Secondly, it showed the effects of educational environment and instructional design which were the features of lifelong educational institutions on elderly learners’ motivation to participate in lifelong education. As a result of the analyses, this research, in common with precedent studies investigated learner’s participation and the features of institutions for lifelong education, showed that the features of institutions affect elderly learner’s motivation significantly. Especially elderly learners mostly considered instructional designs such as excellent teaching members, variety of programs, rogram operation reflected demands of learners and support for activities between learners rather than educational environments such as transportations, convenient facilities and learning expenses of institutions.
Thus, it was expected that it would draw senior citizen’s participation in lifelong education simultaneously with improving its quality if such educational institutions discovered expert instructors for lifelong education for the aged and developed programs reflecting their demands and designed programs to reflect operation of a club that involved activities of elderly learners when educational institutions for the aged programmed for their lifelong educations prepared against an aged society to come.
