    Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose content for Biblical education at home so that Christian parents acquire a clear principle of Christian parenting and their home becomes a true place of Biblical education. Increase in the proportion of dual income families in today's fast-paced society has also increased the proportion of children left in childcare facilities. This reduced the time parents spend with their children, making it more difficult to raise children well. Christian parents face the same difficulty. The reality, however, is that even they focus on early education and prerequisite learning when it comes to child education, neglecting the importance of spiritual growth. Thus, the main goal of this study is to teach parents the importance of spiritual education for their children and to help them recognize and carry out the role they can play to facilitate their children’s spiritual growth. To realize this goal, a few steps are taken to determine what to include in an actual case of parenting consulting. First, the current state of and the demand for Christian parents’ upbringing of toddlers and small children are surveyed and analyzed. Second, pastors who have been consulting parents on the issue are surveyed with the same questionnaire. Finally, the results from the surveys on the current state of upbringing and on the need for Christian consulting are analyzed based on the standard of rating, and the area with the highest frequency was selected as the content of the parental consulting on the spiritual development of toddlers and small children. The results show that the parents are well aware that their children are not their own but God's and that the parents share the responsibility to nurture their children’s spiritual growth. Furthermore, parents know that their children would find the greatest happiness in life only through their faith in God and their utmost wish in child upbringing is spiritual growth and development. The survey on the demand for Christian upbringing suggests that the parents want to begin Biblical discipline for their children early on, and the survey on the current state of Christian upbringing shows that many families do carry out Biblical discipline early on in their children’s lives. Such perceptions of Christian parents indicate the demand for parental consulting on spiritual development of small children. Further analysis is done to identify the area in which consultation is needed the most. The demand survey reveals that Christian parents are unsatisfied with their understanding of small children’s behavior and psychological characteristics. The survey also shows that the parents are unsure of when small children start understanding God and how their faith can be nurtured. There was also a demand to have a church parental consulting program include a discussion about parents’ role. More specifically, guidance on the appropriate conversation method, spiritual education through Bible study at home, and spiritual education through the example of the parents’ spiritual life was demanded. This study classifies the parents’ demands into two, understanding of child development and the role of a parent. Accordingly, under a Christian point view, the study provides realistic suggestions to increase the understanding of small children’s development characteristics and to increase the efficiency of parents’ role in guiding their children’s spiritual lives.
All in all, even if worship and prayer are important for children's spiritual development, parenting techniques suitable for small children should not be overlooked. This is because such techniques help parents understand small children’s thoughts and predict their behaviors. Based on such understanding, parents can carry out spiritual education more efficiently. It is important to keep in mind that spiritual nurturing of children should come not from reluctant obedience but from mandatory sense of responsibility as parents. Parents’ dedicated and voluntary efforts will be never be in vain.
