The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in mothers' sex-role awareness, their preschool child's sex-role stereotype and leadership according to the gender, and the relationship among them. The subjects in this study consisted of 183 four-year-old children, their mothers, and teachers from 14 different daycare centers located in Daegu and Pohang city. To evaluate the mothers' sex-role awareness, Hyo-young Lee's(1978) questionnaire which was originally created by Kyung-soo Kim(1997) was used. To assess the preschoolers' sex-role awareness, Edelbrock and Sugawara's(1978) Sex-Role Learning Index which was modified for Korean culture by Koo-jin Sung(1995) was used. To assess the leadership of the preschoolers, Chae-ho Lee and In-soo Choi's(2008) Preschooler Leadership Rating Scale for Teachers was used.
The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS WIN 18.0. Statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained, and independent-samples t-test was conducted. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated by gender and group to look for correlation between the mothers' sex-role awareness and their child's sex-role stereotype and between the child's sex-role stereotype and leadership.
The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were differences in the mothers' sex-role awareness according to the preschoolers' gender. Second, regarding the sex-role stereotype of the preschoolers by gender, the attitude of gender equality was more found among the preschool girls than among the preschool boys. Third, concerning the leadership of the preschoolers by gender, the preschool girls scored higher than the preschool boys in leadership. Fourth, as to the correlation between the preschoolers' sex-role stereotype and the mothers' sex-role awareness, the boys' sex-role stereotype had nothing to do with their mothers' sex-role awareness, but the girls' sex-role stereotype had a negative correlation to their mothers' sex-role awareness. Fifth, the mothers' sex-role awareness was not correlated to the leadership of the boys, but it was negatively correlated to the leadership of the preschool girls. Sixth, the sex-role stereotype of the preschool boys had a significantly positive correlation to their sensitivity only, one of the subfactors of leadership, and that of the preschool girls had a significantly positive correlation to all the subfactors of their leadership. The findings of the study suggest that the mothers' sex-role awareness is one of the major variables to have a different effect on the sex-role stereotype and leadership development of preschoolers according to their gender.
