Daepoongnyu is a song traditionally used in dances (buddhist dance, sword dance, masked dance, moodangchoom etc.,) during festivities and religious rituals. The progression of Daepoongnyu to the present definition includes its adaptation to modern instrumentation. Widely performed , Daepoongnyu has become increasingly formalized into written musical tradition. In order to examine the melodic progression and musical nuances expressed in the actual performance which are not captured in the written notation, Daepoongnyu of Yichoogsun has been revisited. Yichoongsun is a significant figure in Korean traditional music, active in the Gyeonggi provincial region around the time of Jiyounghee. The present version of Daepoongnyu of Jiyounghee consists of the following nine movements: yeombul, banyeombul, samhyeon taryeong, slow heotteun taryeong, moderate heotteuntaryeong, fast heotteuntaryeong, slow gutgeori, jajin gutgeori, and dangak. In contrast, Daepoongnyu of Yichoongsun includes an additional movement named Samhyeon dodeuri which preceeds samhyeon taryeong. Upon further analysis of the two works, the following points are observed.
First, similarities in rhythm and melodic phrasing can be seen in the Samhyeon dodeuri of melodies by Yichoongsun and Jiyounghee.
Second, Samhyeon dodeuri of Yichoongsun consists of 31 bars while Jiyounghee’s contain 35 bars.
Third, the succinct and playful style of Yichoongsun’s melody is free of fancy ornamentation but rather utilizes haegeum techniques such as ingeojil and sikji, placing emphasis on the characteristic timbre of the instrument.
Finally, heavy use of rhythmic element and sequential progression of melody is observed.
