This research is based on survey responses from adolescents whose characteristics of peer conformity are conspicuous in their middle school life. The aim of the study is to investigate factors of peer conformity which characterize the early stages of adolescence. This study mainly identified the correlation between peer conformity and variables such as morality, social support, social identity and academic stress.
High morality levels led to lower peer conformity levels, while higher academic stress resulted in the opposite. This signifies that maladjustment in classes, excessive workloads and academic pressure cause stress, affecting peer conformity to peer groups exposed to similar experiences or environments. Based on these discussions, this study focuses on the psycho-social characteristics of peer conformity among middle-school students in their early stages of adolescence.
Morality and academic were revealed to have the most influence on peer conformity. Based on these results, this study aims to propose a focus on character education as a means of cultivating morality, which highly affects peer conformity, as well as the development of diverse programs that relieve academic stress in an approriate manner.
