As effectiveness and therapeutic value of play therapy have been verified recently, a demand on it has been increasing and influencing the clients' service desires, as well. Therefore, it is necessary for us to try to understand the clients' desires more widely with the investigation of the inner factor and external factor in play therapy at the same time. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of therapeutic relationship which is an inner factor in play therapy and counseling service satisfaction which is an external factor in play therapy on mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness. Also the study tried to figure out how much influence does counseling service satisfaction has on therapeutic relationship and mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness.
The questions set for this study are as follows:
First, how great is the influence of mother-therapist therapeutic relationship on mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness.
Second, how great is the influence of service satisfaction on mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness.
Third, how great is the moderating effect of counseling service satisfaction in a relationship between mother-therapist therapeutic relationship and mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness.
In the research, the perception of play therapy effectiveness mentioned in the study's questions were subdivided into perception of child's play therapy effectiveness and perception of parents counseling effectiveness that mother recognized.
In order to achieve the purposes, a survey targeted client's mothers whose children participated in play therapy with more than 8 sessions in play therapy clinics located in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi-do. The mothers had children who were more than 2 years old in Korean age and they participated in parents counseling, as well. The survey about mother-therapist therapeutic relationship, counseling service satisfaction and the perception of play therapy effectiveness was conducted. The 212 valid questionnaires out of 218 were analyzed statistically using SPSS 18.0 for frequency, multiple regression analysis and multiple moderating regression analysis.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, the result of examining connection between mother-therapist therapeutic relationship and mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness revealed that the former had a significant influence on the latter. Also, the therapeutic helping relationship of client's mother as assistant was figured out as main variable to predict her perception of play therapy effectiveness. In the relationship between mother-therapist therapeutic relationship and mother's perception of parents counseling effectiveness, the therapeutic relationship had significant effect on mother's perception of parents counseling effectiveness. Furthermore, the therapeutic helping relationship of client's mother as assistant and positive emotional relationship appeared as main variables for predicting mother's perception of parents counseling effectiveness.
Second, the result of examining a relationship between counseling service satisfaction and mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness was that the counseling service satisfaction affected significantly the perception of play therapy; there was no main variable to predict the perception of play therapy among counseling service satisfaction. In the relationship between counseling service satisfaction and mother's perception of parents counseling effectiveness, the former had a significant impact on the latter. Admission procedure and counseling process were the main variables to predict mother's perception of parents counseling effectiveness.
Third, the study investigated moderating effect of counseling service satisfaction between mother-therapist therapeutic relationship and mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness. As a result, the therapeutic helping relationship of client's mother as client herself, assistant and positive emotional relationship showed significant results of moderating effect on counseling service satisfaction; in the connection between the mother-therapist therapeutic relationship and the perception of play therapy effectiveness. In the relation between mother-therapist therapeutic relationship and mother's perception of parents counseling effectiveness, the therapeutic helping relationship of client's mother as assistant and positive emotional relationship showed significant results on moderating effect of counseling service satisfaction.
This study reconfirmed the fact that therapeutic relationship which is an inner factor in therapy affected mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness. Furthermore, by verifying the effects of counseling service satisfaction which is an external factor in therapy on mother's perception of play therapy effectiveness, it enables us to predict that the influence of the external factor on therapy effect will be widely enlarged. Thus the study has a importance in supplying the turning point material to set a therapy strategy for more effective play therapy.
