The purpose of this study was to provide the information to develop the solution to improve the school adjustment of child by investigating relationships between parental attachment, the environmental factor, influencing on the school age boys and girls and self-perceived competence, the individual factor.
The problems of this study were as followed :
First. Does the parental attachment perceived by school age children and self-perceived competence have a direct or indirect effect on the school adjustment?
Second. Are there any significant differences of a direct or indirect effect on the school adjustment of the parental attachment and self-perceived competence perceived by the school age children according to the boys and girls?
For this study, the data were collected from survey for 550 elementary school students at 4, 5 and 6 grade of four elementary schools in Daegu. The School Adjustment Scale(Lee and Kim, 2008) was used, and the revised Self Perception Profile for Children(SPPC) for estimating the self perception degree(Harter, 1985) was applied. The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment Revision(IPPA-R) was used for estimating the Parental Attachment(Armsden and Greenberg, 1987) as well. All collected data were analysed with the SPSS win 19.0 and AMOS 19.0 software.
The results of the study were as followed :
First, the parental attachment perceived by school age children's and self-perceived competence had a direct effect on the school adjustment.
Second, there was no significant difference of direct or indirect effect on the school adjustment of the parental attachment and self-perceived competence perceived by the school age children according to the boys and girls.
In conclusion, it was found that although the Parental Attachment was important, the children's self-perceived competence was more important for school age children's school adjustment. In addition, the result that there were no significant difference according to student gender indicated that the school adjustment program could be applied to all school children regardless their gender.
