This study aims at exploring an effective way for social welfare in order to promote quality of life of immigrant married women's by investigating the factors that affect their quality of life. To achieve this purpose, this study examined the related factors of role burden, social support, and acculturative stress, affecting quality of life of immigrant married women with by way of applying the Double ABCX model.
This study was conducted to focus on research questions.
First, what is the immigrant married women’s demographic characteristics and how the demographic characteristics affect the role burden, social support, acculturative stress, and quality of life?
Second, is it possible to apply the research model in terms of immigrant married women’s quality of life based on McCubbin and Patterson’s Double ABCX Model?
Third, is the life quality of immigrant married women's affected by role burden, social support and acculturative stress?
Fourth, what are the direct and indirect effects on quality of life of immigrant married women’s role burden related to social support and acculturative stress?
To investigate these research questions, a survey was carried out to five hundred immigrant married women in Daegu and Gyeongsang nam-buk do. Among them, two hundred and forty responded the research questions and two hundred seventeen data were good enough to be used in the analysis of this study immigrant married women. To examine the collected data, SPSS version 18.0 and AMOS version 18.0 programs were used for statistical analysis. The role burden, social support, acculturative stress and quality of life were used as research tools and results from the survey are as follow.
First, the demographic characteristics are varied in age, income, and the number of children. It appears that the income and the number of children have impact on the social support and these two make significant differences in social support. Furthermore, the age, the level of education, occupation, income, and number of children make the acculturative stress different. In addition, it is examined that the level of education, occupation, income, and number of children are the factors that change the quality of life
Second, it is possible to apply McCubbin and Patterson’s Double ABCX Model to the research model in terms of quality of life of immigrant married women.
Third, the role burden, social support, and acculturative stress impact on the quality of life of immigrant married women. The role burden of immigrant married women has negative impacts on social support and has positive impacts on acculturative stress. These results represent that the role burden is critical factor to the quality of life because of the negative impacts on social support. In addition, due to the fact that the social support has negative impacts on the acculturative stress, it appears that as the social support increases the acculturative stress moderates.
Fourth, it shows that the social support and acculturative stress act as an intervention between role burden of immigrant married women and quality of life. After the research on the complete mediation and partial mediation model, the partial mediation model was advocated because the partial mediation model is better model than the complete mediation model.
The theoretical perspective draw from this research confirms that the Double ABCX Model can be applied in domestic to promote the quality of life of immigrant married women. Moreover, this research is significant because it reveals that the social support and acculturative stress are important factors in the role burden of immigrant married women. To promote the quality of life of immigrant married women practically, we should erode the acculturative stress, construct the social support that help in multilateral aspects, and reinforce the ways that immigrant married women can overcome role burden. Politically, the active public relation is required to change Korean society’s view in the multi-culture family, and it is crucial to recognize the settlement of the altered view in Korean society is important to improve their life quality.
