In this thesis, the current situation of design education in Korea was looked into using textbooks and education plans. In this process, current design education system was found to be not enough to provide conditions that enable students to develop creativeness. To tackle this problem, solutions were searched based on a motivation theory. Moreover, a new design education program that resolves this problem and spurs students' motivation through introducing Keller's ARCS motivation strategy was developed. Furthermore, real cases in which students used such new contents were examined and analyzed to find out the effects of those contents on students' motivation to learn.
The process of this thesis is as follows.
First, the motivation theory is analyzed and the theory of learning motivation and motivation planning are examined.
Second, elements of Keller's ARCS model -a model for motivation-triggering strategy- and motivation planning are looked into.
Third, the current situation of design education in elementary schools and design education contents are analyzed using precedent researches, textbooks and education plans. Based on the motivation theory, problems of design education in elementary schools are analyzed and solutions are searched.
Fourth, a new model for design education that connects elements of Keller's ARCS model -a model for motivation-triggering strategy-, motivation planning process and design education planning are created.
Fifth, a program that befits the new education model designed by the researcher is developed and effective ways to manage design education contents are created.
Sixth, real cases that use the education model are examined and analyzed. Also, its effects on learning motivation are verified.
The design education contents for children based on the motivation theory that the researcher proposes is focused on triggering children's motivation in elementary school's classes and holding their interests. Furthermore, the contents are designed to improve students' academic performances and induce creative learning effects through stronger concentration, relevance, confidence and satisfaction that are among the elements of ARCS.
Moreover, considering the fact the ages between 11 and 13 are considered to be important to learn conceptual design-elements, principles and make a visual outcome based on ideas, the researcher developed the program 'tailor designed for the upper grades of elementary schools- that motivates children to get as much a completed outcome as possible so that the completed outcome itself serves as a motivation. Detailed learning plans and application plans using ARCS's motivation-triggering elements and a planning strategy are proposed, designing a system that prompts student to engage in learning activities aggressively and teachers to teach smoothly by spurring students' concentration, relevance, confidence and satisfaction rather than by outcome-oriented contents that we can easily see in current design classes of elementary schools.
The motivating effects of the developed design education program were measured through experimental classes based on strengthened self-efficiency and learning motivation. Through this process, the outcome was analyzed and its motivation-triggering effects were verified.
The main goal of this study is that this study will help create a design teaching system that triggers students' motivation and therefore encourage students' self-initiated thinking habits and creativity. Furthermore, The researcher hopes this study will help strengthen the sense of achievement and build confidence of both teachers and students. Therefore, in-depth follow-up studies are required from the levels of school field, researcher and the nation, also relevant studies and following studies on contents application will be conducted in the future.
