The latter Bronze Age on the southern area of the Korean Peninsula can be divided by Songkuk-Ri cultural distribution tange and others, which has no evidence of Songkuk-Ri culture. This paper defined the 'Type' is a subordinate concept of 'Culture'. Dangdong-Ri type in Han River valley, Chunchun-Ri type of Kangwon west ridge area, Powoul-Ri type of Kangwon east ridge area, and Kumdan-Ri type of southeastern area have no evidence of Songkuk-Ri culture. This research is a study for Kumdan-Ri type.
I chronologized Bronze Age of southeastern area as 7 stages according to subdivided dwelling shapes and the transformation of excavated rernains from dwellings.
1st term(early stage), 2nd~4th term(middle stage), 5th~7th term(latter stage), Kumdan-Rity peisincludedin 5th~7th term.
Deep bowl shaped vessel, which is carved with grain pattern of oblique or across line in southeastern area of the latter part of Bronze Age, is named 'Kumdan-Ri type pottery'. Kumdan-Ri type pottery is the representative remains of southeastern area of the latter part of Bronze Age.
As a difference of burial main part, I classified several tombs such as a soil hole grave, a split stone grave, a flat stone grave, dolmen and a piled stone grave. The majority of the tombs belonged to the latter part of Bronze Age. The parts of a soil hole grave, a split stone grave and a flat stone grave were in the former period of Bronze age. The main burial method of Songuk-Ri cultural distribution range was whole body burial, while the popular burial method of Kumdan-Ri type distribution range was the secondary burial like cremation. The tomb for Kumdan-Ri type distribution range is less than Songuk-Ri cultural distribution range, and there is a possibility of conversion of disused dwellings into tomb.
There are time periodic characteristics of settlement structure.
1st stage~3rd stage:2~3 large dwelling site which are located on the top of the hill in arowor in parallel. 4th stage:The number of dwellings is increased in settlement. The settlement is arranged in arowon the slope of the hill. 5th stage:The settlement is formed in groups on the slope of the hill. 6th stage:Dwellng group is divided superior proup(swpeciaaly large scaled dwelling sites) in tonorm alone. 7th stage:Dwelling sites become more standardized and smaller due to the regulation to arrange dwelling groups. Classification in settlement is appeaared from the 4th stage, and it becomes prominent as settlement is structured and stabilized.
A round ditch is used for ritual space, and the surrounding settlement group, which is between two other round ditch in visibility range, is made as a key settlement base.
Kumdan-Ri type is gradually disappeared as the beginning of Sam Han era.
Remains and relics of Kundan-Ri type have many differnces with those of Songkuk-Ri culture of the same period. While Songkuk-Ri cultural distribution range built dweelings that took the round type without a brazier, Kumdan-Ri cultural distribution range built dwellings that took the square type with a brazier. Relics for cultivation were mainly terraced field by using a bend. THe unit area of rice field was not large enough, because an alluvium was not debeloped in this area. Most of remains in Kundan-Ri culture distribution range were terracotta spindle whorls, northeastern style stone blade. Songkuk-Ri style bronze tool, beak style stone tool were not excavated in Kundam-Ri culture distribution range.
The differnces between both regions came from the occupational differences from the geographical and climatib feature. It means that spred of water-based-rice farming, which is the base of Songkuk-ri culture, was relatively weak in kumdan-Ri type.
I suppose that the feature of early Bronze Age was continued strongly in Kumdan-Ri type distribution range, so ti had conservative culture compared with Songkuk-RI cultural distrivution range was less advanced or lagged begind. It means both ranges downsized dwelling scaled, and standardized dwellings. The reason I guess is the transformation of family type from large family(community) to nuclear family(individual). The changes shows that the latter Bronze Age(Kumdan-Ri type) became more complicated and hierarchized than the former period of Bronze age.
